The City of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota's sixth largest municipality, is seeking applicants for a Planning intern within the Community Development Department. These positions provide a great opportunity to work with a motivated and active staff to learn how development and redevelopment is done in a large suburban city.
This position provides a great opportunity to be involved in a wide range of projects and activities that promote development in this diverse, growing city. The Intern will experience a variety of community development projects that will prepare him/her for future employment in local government planning. The work can vary based on the intern's particular interests, including various aspects of planning, research and analysis, development review, transportation planning, policy and ordinance changes, and urban design.
Undergraduate or graduate level studies in community development, urban and regional planning, urban affairs, public administration, environmental policy, architecture or related field
Experience
Experience with Microsoft Office programs and applications
Licenses and Certifications
Valid driver's license

- Participate in various projects within the Planning Division as needed and per the interest of the intern
- Provide customer service by responding to resident requests for zoning information
- Assist with review of development proposals
- Process data entry
- Assist with landscaping checks for new home or business constructionÂ
- Research zoning codes
- Attend evening Planning Commission meetings
- Perform other duties as assigned
Undergraduate or graduate level studies in community development, urban and regional planning, urban affairs, public administration, environmental policy, architecture or related field
Experience
Experience with Microsoft Office programs and applications
Licenses and Certifications
Valid driver's license

- ArcMap GIS experience
- Adobe Indesign experience
- Current involvement in community development or civic organizations and activities
- Experience working with people from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, racial and ethnic backgrounds
- Fluency in Spanish, Hmong, Russian, Somali, Lao or Vietnamese language(s)

- Core business hours are set by departments based on operational needs. Â Alternative schedules can be arranged, but must comply with the City's Alternative Work Arrangement policy.Â
- Monday-Friday, normal office hours
- This is a non-exempt, non-union, six- (6) month, temporary internship position that will work a minimum of 20 hours per week up to 40 hours per week, subject to a flexible schedule with occasional evening meeting attendance
- Office environment; exposure to computer screens; working closely with others, frequent interruptions
