What are the responsibilities and job description for the GIS Specialist (FT) position at City of Brooklyn Park?
- Lead a wide array of GIS and data analysis projects
- Collaborate with the GIS & Data Analysis Coordinator to manage the city’s enterprise GIS
- Streamline city department operations with spatial analysis and data integration
- Build internal and public GIS applications to distribute and democratize city data
- Track local demographic information to inform the city’s goals and initiatives
- Support the city’s ArcGIS users with their training and software needs
- Create, document, and automate enterprise GIS datasets and workflows
- Partner with a rock star Communications team to promote the city’s programs and mission
- Ensure our GIS products meet city branding, accessibility, and other quality standards
Work Environment
As a technology-heavy position, this position can be conducted remotely up to three days a week, with one office day including Wednesdays. Remote employees will need to confirm they have access to:
- A stable internet connection
- An ergonomically appropriate workspace
Education
Associate’s degree in geography, GIS, data analysis, public administration or another related field
Experience
One (1) year of experience in GIS and data analysis
Equivalency
An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered. Examples of equivalencies accepted, but not limited to:
- No degree & 3 years of highly-related experience
- Unrelated degree with GIS Certificate & 2 years of highly-related experience
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proficiency with ArcGIS Desktop software (preferably ArcGIS Pro)
- Experience with creating and editing spatial datasets
- Knowledge of statistical analysis
- Experience with data analysis and geoprocessing
- Experience with ArcGIS Online
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and direction
- Ability to translate highly technical information into plain language
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with outside parties
- Ability to develop and maintain positive and professional relationships with internal and external customers
- Ability to collaborate with various city departments, residents, neighborhood leaders, city officials, media representatives, and the general public

Desired Qualifications
- Experience with enterprise geodatabases
- Experience with Arcade
- Experience with Python, especially to perform spatial analysis

- Experience with demographic analysis
- Previous experience working with people from various cultural, socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic backgrounds
- Fluency in Spanish, Hmong, Russian, Somali, Lao or Vietnamese language(s)
Physical Requirements and Work Conditions
Ability to meet physical demands of the job, including but not limited to:- Office environment; exposure to computer screens; repetitive keyboarding movement; working closely with others, with frequent interruptions
- Ability to remain in a stationary position for prolonged periods
- Must be able to transport equipment or otherwise move 5-10 pounds occasionally
- High attention to detail and deadlines

Selection Process
The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience and/or an oral examination (100%). Anticipated Hiring Wage: $74,900.80 to $80,995.20 annually
