JOB SUMMARY/OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION: The incumbent is charged with the responsibility for the performance of the fleet maintenance shop, assigned personnel, and the repair and maintenance of the Citys vehicle and related equipment. This job requires a solid working knowledge of automobiles, medium/heavy trucks, construction equipment and small engine repair. Along with hands on performance of repair activities, this job requires effective supervision of assigned personnel. The primary objective is to utilize periodic maintenance and inspections along with quality repairs to maximize availability and minimize the overall life cycle costs of the Citys moving equipment. May be called out in emergencies, scheduled to work nights, weekends and/or holidays. Qualifications and a summary of essential and related duties and responsibilities are set forth below.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Design, schedule, oversee and/or perform repairs, periodic inspection and maintenance of all City vehicles, rolling stock, and related equipment. Design, oversee and/or perform repairs and coordinates outside services on all equipment. Maintain and control hand tools, shop tools, shop supplies, oils, emergency part inventories, consignments and shop resources. Advise management of equipment abuse or lack of operator maintenance. Reports to management repair requests that do not appear to be cost effective. Qualifies equipment as fit for service and Adead-lines@ unsafe or self-destructive equipment. Instructs personnel in proper checkout, cleanup and operator maintenance. Control all hazardous, salvage and recyclable materials pertaining to operation of the shop. With the assigned clerical staff, plans and implements periodic maintenance scheduling on all equipment and keeps supervisor advised of any scheduling problems with maintenance or repairs. Secures necessary quotes for parts and supplies in accordance with purchase policies. Supervises assigned employees and oversees and accounts for all repair parts and supply purchases for shop activities. Perform the duties and responsibilities of Mechanic Classification as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of the methods, materials and practices of modern automotive maintenance.
- Knowledge in repair of all components of a variety of light equipment, heavy equipment, small engines and agricultural equipment.
- Knowledge of safety requirements and occupational hazards of equipment repair, machine shop, welding and transport operations.
- Ability to schedule, supervise and direct the work of other shop employees. Ability to participate in major repair projects.
- Ability to create and maintain good working relationships with subordinates, other employees and managers.
- Ability to perform assigned duties timely and effectively while working carefully and complying with safety rules.
- Ability to follow directions and complete assignments accurately and on time.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS LISTED AS FOLLOWS:
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or GED equivalency certificate as issued by a State Board of Education. Four (4) years experience as a mechanic, including diesel and automotive work, welding, equipment fabrication and hydraulic repair and maintenance. Formal training on the utilization of computer diagnostic systems. Minimum of 1 year of gas and arc welding experience. Graduate of a four-year state-sponsored journey-level apprenticeship program and certified as a journeyman mechanic or ASE Certification as a Master Automobile Technician or Master Medium/Heavy Truck is desirable. Two (2) years college-level or vocational training in light-duty or heavy-duty equipment repair (including gas, diesel and electric) is preferred. Or, any combination of experience and training that provides the desired skills, knowledge and abilities.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS: Valid Florida Drivers License. Florida Commercial Driver's License Class "B" or obtain within six (6) months of appointment.
