Job Summary

The Sign Technician is responsible for installing traffic signs, barricading streets, painting curbs and arrows. Assist in mowing grass, trim trees and bushes. These duties are performed for public streets, Employee works independently in the field and is responsible for decision making requiring technical discretion, sound judgement, and familiarity with a variety of codes, ordinances, and construction methods. The employee works according to set procedures under direct supervision.

Key Functions/Knowledge/Skills

  • Safely operates tools and equipment in all types of weather, or conditions. The job may include morning, evening, weekend, holiday, split, or other work schedules.
  • Install traffic signs and ensures other signs are properly mounted.
  • Assist in barricading streets as necessary.
  • Keeps record of traffic reports and inventory of equipment
  • Installs guard rails as needed
  • Mows grass and trim tree branches and bushes.
  • Digs holes and mixes cement for the installation of poles and signs
  • Cleans, services and maintains equipment use for daily operations.
  • Reports hazardous and dangerous conditions in and around the facility and streets, including incidents/accidents immediately.
  • Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Education & Experience

High school or GED.
One (1) yr. related experience.

Special Certifications & Licenses

Valid Texas Driver's License

Independence & Judgement

Minimal judgment; instructions, once established and defined, normally allow the job to be accomplished without direct and/or constant supervision; mostly routine work requiring that employee recognize obvious problems; situations outside the instructions are referred to the supervisor or lead worker.

Initiative & Ingenuity

Low chance for error because work is routine/repetitive/simple/reviewed carefully; standard procedures: not demanded to come up with creative solutions; refers anything unusual to supervisor.

Level & Frequency of Outside Contact

Frequent contact with the public or other organizations; interactions may require obtaining cooperation of people; courtesy and tact are required when dealing with moderately difficult or sensitive issues.

Physical Demands

Light physical effort such as standing, lifting, moving, pulling, pushing, etc. Ability to exert up to 30-50lbs. of force occasionally to move objects.

Responsibility for Equipment & Property

Responsible for assigned equipment and property used outside of office, and use of a City vehicle.

Working Conditions

Fair inside or outside conditions; exposure to disagreeable conditions is brief or otherwise insignificant; space problems; only occasional situations that place the employee in a stressful environment.

Other Requirements

The City of Brownsville requires all employees to successfully pass a Drug & Alcohol and a physical examination and a Background Check.
