GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This position holds professional responsibility for enforcement of state sanitation laws and regulations in an environmental health field. Work involves responsibility for the inspection of public and private facilities for conformance with state sanitation laws and regulations. Work also involves the responsibility for assisting others in understanding proper public health practices, policies, and requirements as per state laws. EXAMPLES OF SPECIFIC WORK PERFORMED:
- Inspects facilities in Brown County concerning handling, processing and selling food as stated in Texas law and establishing enforcement of the laws, recommending changes in food processing and related practices consistent with the legal requirements (includes mandated public schools' inspections 2x annually).
- Inspects foster homes, day care facilities for environmental and sanitation compliance and performs inspection in emergency situations involving fire, transport or vehicle accidents when food products are involved. Prepares written reports on inspection findings, identifying violations of regulations, recommends corrective measures to be taken or possible court action, maintaining all necessary records and reports.
- Investigates complaints concerning violations of sanitation laws and secures corrections and abatements on public health nuisance complaints, including insect or rodent infestations, enforcing sanitation law and regulations when appropriate.
- Provides public education concerning food and environmental sanitation practices through individual contacts and through civic or public meetings.
- Participates in surveys and specialized environmental health programs.
- Assists with special population-based projects which are aimed at environmental change for disease prevention related to food establishments or vector control.
- Facilitates mosquito control planning including mosquito trapping and testing.
- Responds in emergency situations as a Health Department team member.
- Assist with procurement of supplies from city warehouse on a regular basis,
- Performs related work as required by Supervisor.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIORNMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Works indoor and outdoor, pleasant, and unpleasant conditions. Exposure to adverse weather, dirty conditions, orders on inspections. May be exposed to irate individuals while performing duties. Moderate physical activity: excessive travel and call out after hours on nights and weekends. Ability to sit, stand, and move about an office or building. Employee occasionally lifts materials weighting 20 to 30 pounds or climbs in order to reach cabinets. Ability to bend and squat in order to file or retrieve information. May be exposed to electrical, mechanical, or chemical hazards when operating or maintaining office equipment. Ability to see and handle small objects. Possible exposure to germs and infectious disease through clients receiving medical services.
CONTACT WITH OTHERS:
Significant contact with the general public on a daily basis both in person and by telephone; daily contact with city employees; occasional contact with state and local enforcement agency officials both in person and by telephone.

- Knowledge of environmental problems which endanger public health.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Must have High School Diploma or G.E.D. Prefer registration as a Sanitation or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills, and abilities.
REQUIRED LICENSE AND CERTIFICATES:
- Must have a valid Texas Driver License.
- Must have or obtain Food Service Sanitation Certification from Texas Department of State Health Services and other certificates required by this agency.
- Obtain IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800 NIMS certificates within 6 months of hire.
