PAY: $13.26 per hour (Entry) / $13.51 per hour (Returning)
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Head Lifeguard or Aquatics Supervisor
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This is a part-time position and is scheduled to work less than 19 hours per week mostly during the spring and summer, and less than 1000 hours per fiscal year. Position is responsible for constant observance of various age groups for swimming in the pool; to control the public in the use of the pool facilities; to administer lifesaving techniques and first aid in case of accidents or emergencies around pool areas; to call for additional assistance immediately when necessary. Responsible for keeping the restrooms and pool area clean according to health regulations. Will help organize and conduct “Learn to swim classes.” Must be willing to adopt and exhibit the City of Brownwood “I SERVE” Core Values.
EXAMPLES OF SPECIFIC WORK PERFORMED:
1) Will constantly observe participants in the pool; 2) Will ensure water safety and enforce all safety rules in and out of the water; 3) Will keep all areas of the pool and restroom areas clean; 4) Will administer first aid and respond immediately to call for assistance in case of accidents or emergencies in and around the pool area and the premises; 5) Head Lifeguard or person designated by Recreation Supervisor will be responsible for taking regular interval readings of chlorine and PH levels and check necessary equipment for sanitation of pools; 6) Mow, weed-eat, and rake lawn; 7) Must attend weekly in service Lifeguard training; 8) Will work with 5 to 7 other Water Safety Instructors to organize and conduct “Learn to Swim Classes”; 9) Perform other duties as assigned by Head Lifeguard or Recreation Supervisor.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Outdoors: exposed to sun and water the majority of the time. Work is pleasant most of the time. Ability to sit and stand. Employee will be exposed to seasonal temperatures while performing maintenance duties and be exposed to mechanical and chemical hazards. Ability to lift materials weighing up to 30 pounds frequently and 50-100 pounds occasionally and be able to drag up to 80 pounds occasionally. Ability to bend, stoop, walk, push brooms and sweep. Ability to operate a lawn mower and weed-eater. Ability to walk over sloped and uneven terrain. Work involves getting dirty and wet and cutting grass. Employee will be exposed to dirt, dust, noises, fumes and odors. Ability to communicate in writing and verbally with the public. Ability to understand verbal and written communication.

Constant contact with other lifeguards and the general public.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Must have enough education to at least read, write and effectively communicate.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Must have knowledge of lifesaving techniques; ability and skills in swimming; knowledge of basic first aid procedures; knowledge of handling chemicals for swimming pools. Good communication skills, tactfulness, and discretion with other lifeguards and general public is required.
REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:
A current driver license is a plus. Red Cross Lifeguarding and First Aid Certification and Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certification are required. WSI (Water Safety Instructor) Certification is required.
