General Purpose
Performs a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance work and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of City streets and storm drainage, facilities and systems. Provides assistance to various departments when approved by supervisors.
Supervision Received
Works under the direct supervision of the Street Superintendent.
Supervision Exercised
None generally. May serve as a lead worker over other maintenance workers and laborers when assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible for participating in the maintenance of City streets, right-of-ways, storm systems, city facilities, traffic signs, and all other residential services. Work includes responsibility for ensuring the proper materials, tools, and equipment at work sites and performing in accordance with safety regulations, and documentation of work performed.
Operates medium-sized trucks and equipment in the loading and hauling of materials, men, and equipment.
Plows, hauls, spreads, and dumps snow, dirt and other materials.
Insures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools including cleaning, servicing and light maintenance; and checking equipment and tools after use.
Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and, at the first sign of trouble, refers defects or needed repairs to supervision/mechanic; cleans equipment.
Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, such as pavement cutting, pavement repair, ditch digging, manhole and catch basin cleaning, sewer main repair and pipe repair, laying and backfilling sewers and trenches, patching streets, cleaning and clearing brush and leaves, street signs, and the performance of other manual tasks as required by specific job requirements.
Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in street maintenance repair.
Controls traffic at work sites by flagging to guide traffic through work area, as required or assigned.
Peripheral Duties
Performs back-up duties for related positions as required or as assigned.
Employee may be asked to perform other duties based on the business needs of the City.
The employee may be asked to work holidays.
Desired Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from High School or GED equivalent, plus some experience in the operation of commercial automotive equipment. Two (2) years’ experience in a similar position preferred.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to remain on call 24 hours. Must be familiar in the operation of and have the ability to operate all equipment at the direction of the supervisor; Ability to operate automotive equipment in a safe and efficient manner; Ability to work at heights of 25 feet; Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; Ability to work safely; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions; Ability to keep routine records on time spent and materials used on individual jobs.
Skill in the operation of tools and equipment.
Special Requirements
Must possess a valid State of Ohio driver’s license with a CDL and a minimum Class B endorsement. A Class A endorsement preferred. Must be available for twenty-four (24) hour call outs.
Tools and Equipment Used
Hammers, shovels, wrenches, Gradall, Skidster, street sweeping equipment, leaf vacs, sewer vacuum and camera, trucks.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The employee is exposed to cold, wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration. The employee may be required to work in high, precariously positions.
The noise level in the work environment at times is moderately noisy. Occasionally, work and projects are performed at various City locations, or required to go, and required to travel to these sites. The position may also require travel for the purpose of attending training workshops.
