Under the general supervision of the Parks Superintendent, the Parks Tech I performs skilled and semi-skilled labor in various aspects of athletic field maintenance including turf and skinned area maintenance, minor construction and repairs, and related service activities for the City’s sport complexes. The Parks Technician I will be responsible for the general upkeep and cleaning of park facilities; performs landscape maintenance including mowing, watering, pruning, weed control and facility/equipment repairs; operates a variety of motorized equipment; operates a variety of hand and power tools. This position is also responsible for ensuring City parks are ready for public use by picking up trash and debris. Additional duties include the operation of splash pads, which require working in cramped environments, and with pool chemicals. Working special events, festivals, and parades are also a part of duties assigned. May oversee parks related projects such as the installation of playground equipment, irrigation systems, or reconstruction of a park.

Examples of Duties

  • Maintains the city's landscape and parks by mowing the grass, weed eating, trimming trees, picking up trash and cleaning restrooms.
  • Cleans and maintains the shop by sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, trimming trees and bushes, picking up trash, cleaning bathrooms and any ancillary areas.
  • Inspects irrigation systems at Sportsplex, City Parks and the Municipal Building to ensure that they are working properly.
  • Operates tree trimming equipment, pole saws, chain saws, hand saw, loppers, drills, grinders, saws, and other various types of equipment for trail and turf maintenance.
  • Notifies city departments of building, water, electrical and ground repairs that cannot be resolved by PARD.
  • Notifies police department / Animal Control Officer of rule violations made by citizens in parks.
  • Oversees and trains community service workers and volunteers as needed.
  • Interacts with public officials, city staff, and public in a professional manner at all times.
  • Maintains and provides mechanical repairs on park and mowing/landscaping equipment.
  • Inspects and repairs play-scape equipment.
  • Performs light carpentry, electrical and plumbing, and painting projects and repairs.
  • Maintains records on federal and state regulated chemical, herbicide and insecticide applications.
  • Coordinates and assists with water quality issues in parks; record keeping required.
  • Maintains, operates and keeps records of splash pad operations, repairs, pool chemical use, and other responsibilities required.
  • Operates boom operating lift during holiday decorating and installs and removes holiday lighting and signage as directed. Will be trained to use other equipment safely to repair trails, build displays, make repairs and improve sports and lawn turf.
  • Participates in the on-call rotation after hours, weekends and holidays.
  • Required to work special events and during holidays. (Ex: Easter, 4th of July, Thanksgiving weekend, etc.) At times this involves late nights, weekends and during inclement weather. Traffic and pedestrian control may be assigned as well.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent. Minimum of 6 months of full-time related work experience in landscaping, park maintenance or equivalent combination of training and/or experience which evidences a comprehensive knowledge of required job duties and expectations.
Special Qualifications:
Valid and Current State of Texas Class “C” driver's license required

  • Knowledge of uses and purposes of general construction tools and equipment; safe work practices.
  • Ability to perform unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in a variety of construction and maintenance activities; perform heavy manual labor; learn to operate a variety of construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to work extended hours as needed to cover events.
  • Ability to organize and communicate effectively.
  • Knowledge of CPR.
