ASSISTANT LIQUOR STORE MANAGER
Position Title: Assistant Liquor Store Manager
Department: Municipal Liquor Store
Supervisor's Title: Liquor Store Manager Work Status: Full-time
PURPOSE
Assists Liquor Store Manager in all aspects of the on and off sale municipal liquor store operation.
Responsibilities are but not limited to overseeing the food service portion of the business, supervising staff, purchasing, pricing, advertising, stocking, and selling beverages to generate cash flow and a net profit. Performs duties and tasks directed from Liquor Store Manager but acts as a bartender/server, cashier, and stocker during a majority of time. Performs Manager responsibilities in the absence of the
Liquor Store Manager.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to: Liquor Store Manager
Communicates with:
- Internally- Liquor Store Manager, City administrative staff and other City employees;
- Externally - Vendors/suppliers, MMBA staff, community organizations, and customers.
Supervises: Bartenders and Cooks
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Sells liquor, beer, and wine: mixes/serves drinks and opens/serves containers for on-sale consumption; assists customers in locating/selecting merchandise; and operates cash register to ring purchases.
- Receives goods, update inventory records and stocks on shelves, in coolers and in storeroom.
- Aids in coordinating second-location events.
- Sets up cash register for daily sales, runs and reviews morning reports discussing any major discrepancies with City Office, and prepares and makes daily bank deposit in Managers absence.
- Assists Liquor Store Manager in overseeing the daily operation of the municipal liquor store including all required record keeping for beer/liquor/wine sales, pull-tabs, and daily deposits.
- Develops and oversees store policies and procedures.
- Handles purchases and make related decisions: orders liquor, beer, and other supplies; follows up with vendors on missing or damaged items; and reviews bills for accuracy and submits to city office for payment in the Managers absence.
- Prices products in conformance with City policies, ensures the products are shelved and properly marked and the prices are changed where appropriate.
- Assists in inventory management.
- Helps determines methods to increase profitability of operations and decrease expenses.
- Assists in advertising specials/sales following state guidelines; and sets up merchandise displays to enhance sales.
- Supervises part-time employees by assigning/prioritizing/delegating work, evaluating work and coaching, training, and participating in hiring decisions/rewards/discipline and discharge.
- Performs regular building maintenance tasks; assists with ongoing cleaning; and maintains store's appearance during work hours.
- Attends required training to maintain current knowledge and trains/updates employees with relevant information.
- Knowledge on Food Safety requirements, kitchen guidelines, food prep and cooking.
- Works with non-charitable gambling in absence of manager.
- Attends monthly council meetings in absence of manager.
- *Is an active participant in community events and organizations.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- *Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by Liquor Store Manager based on needs of employer and requirements of the job change.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES
- *Knowledge of and ability to follow laws related to the sale of liquor and operation of a business.
- Knowledge of liquor/tobacco laws and marketing/advertising techniques.
- Knowledge of liquor industry and liquor store management including merchandising, retail sales, and customer service.
- *Knowledge of and ability to follow relevant city ordinances and policies.
- Skill in making timely purchases of merchandise and controlling inventory.
- Ability to use judgment and discretion in sales based on factors such as age and state of inebriation.
- Ability to appropriately respond to intoxicated person(s).
- Ability to supervise and motivate employees and promote safety in the workplace.
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public, elected officials, sales personnel, and state officials.
- Ability to use a computer, computerized cash register and 10-key calculator.
- Ability to use small hand tools (screwdrivers, wrench, hammer) for minor repairs to equipment.
- *Ability to perform mathematical calculations including making change and accounts receivable work.
- Ability to safely move/lift/carry cases of beer and liquor.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time.
- *Ability to work flexible hours: days, nights, weekends & holidays.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Food Manager's License within 3 months of employment.
MACHINES, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT USED
- *Cash register, computer, printer/scanner, calculator, kitchen equipment, handcarts, cleaning tools and supplies.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- *High school degree or equivalent.
- Post Secondary course work (e.g. marketing, accounting, merchandising, retail sales).
- Experience working in a liquor/food establishment.
- Experience in merchandising.
- Experience with inventory control procedures.
- Experience in employee supervision.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- *2 year post-secondary degree in business management or accounting.
- 1 or 2 years of management experience in a liquor store.
- 1 or 2 years of experience with a computerize inventory system.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Works indoors during majority of time. Works through extended periods of standing and walking to wait on customers, stock merchandise, and set-up displays. Uses a 6' or 8' ladder. Performs repetitive movements, bends, crouches, pushes/pulls, twists/turns, and lifts/carries objects requiring light to moderate physical effort while receiving/stocking merchandise and waiting on customers.
