The City of Buffalo is looking for a Fiber Inside Plant (ISP) Technician to handle customer premise installations, daily operations, and administrative tasks—all while upholding the City’s safety standards and commitment to excellence in service.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Operational Responsibilities Installs, troubleshoots, and maintains equipment for GPON carrier networks. Installation of new communication plant including, switching equipment, service drops, and related infrastructure. This includes assisting in the installation and maintenance of switches, routers, ONT’s, GPONs, and WIFI networks. Install and terminate fiber optic cables within indoor environments as needed.Conduct routine maintenance and inspections of fiber optic equipment.Ability to interact with customers on many levels from introductory calls to fiber and available packages.Responds to citizen/customer complaints/inquiries in a courteous and expeditious manner.Able to confer with customers to troubleshoot, educate, or support related equipment.Responsible for maintenance of equipment, tools, and safety equipment; recommend future maintenance, repair, and replacement needs.Performs necessary departmental record keeping and administrative duties as assigned. Performs Other Essential Job Responsibilities Test fiber optic cables using an OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer), power meters, and other equipment.Identify, diagnose and fix issues within a fiber network.Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.Hours outside of the normal work schedule will be required for on-call and emergencies.Manage connections in patch panels and terminals and ensure proper labeling and documentation of connections.

Ability to provide construction and installation techniques with fiber materials, including digging, trenching, potholing with hand tools, small, medium, and large equipment.Ability to work in tight indoor spaces for extended periods of time.Ability to communicate with co-workers and various business contacts in a professional and courteous manner.Ability to communicate efficiently both written and orally, will be responsible for creating reports, diaries and communicating with contractors and the public.Ability to pay close attention to detail.Willing to work "hands on" as directed in the event of unforeseen emergencies in regard for the public safety and the common good of the citizens of Buffalo.Ability to evaluate, test, and repair sophisticated equipment.Must be able to work well with the public and fellow employees as a "team player."Must be willing to work in strict adherence to city, state, federal safety rules, and regulations.Able to confer with customers to troubleshoot, educate, or support related equipment.
