Distinguishing Features of the Class
An incumbent, on an assigned shift, is responsible for the efficient and economical operation and maintenance of steam boilers, pumps, stokers and related boiler room equipment. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the Senior Housing Project Engineer and in accordance with standard procedures and practices. New and unusual assignments are performed only after consultation with the immediate supervisor. There is no supervisory responsibility with this position.
Examples of work (Illustration Only)
- Operates and assists in the maintenance of steam boilers, pumps, stokers, hot water supply boilers and related boiler room equipment;
- maintains constant or specified steam pressure;
- Operates electric pumps;
- Assists in minor repairs of mechanical equipment;
- Sweeps, dusts, washes and paints boiler room and equipment;
- Blows and cleans tube;
- Repairs fire brick;
- Performs minor repairs on steamlines, valves, traps and radiators;
- Frees coal shute of snow;
- Checks coal and oil delivery receipts;
- Receives and may respond to calls from tenants relative to complaints or emergencies;
- Maintains the operation of the boiler plant when the shift engineer is making his rounds or responding to service calls;
- Maintains records and makes entries into daily log;
May be required to drive to and from various work sites; Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a current Second Class Stationary Engineer's License issued by the City of Buffalo in accordance with city ordinances that must be presented at time of filing application and maintained during employment.
Special Requirement
Possession of a current New York State Driver's License that must be presented at time of appointment and
maintained during employment.
