Under supervision, to perform a variety of trade or craft jobs in the construction and maintenance of municipal buildings, facilities and related equipment; to operate equipment as required; and perform related work as required.
Engages in construction, maintenance, or shop work by performing semi-skilled work, and assisting in skilled work such as metal work, electrical work, painting, welding, cement and cement block work, pipefitting, carpentry, meter or valve repair, plumbing, and other work of a craft or trade nature; may work in one or more crafts or trades, or may work under a lesser degree of supervision in one or more areas where a journey level is not required; uses the tools of the trade; operates power equipment (except heavy equipment) as required; drives on City business.
Employment Standards:
Knowledge of the tools, equipment, and materials commonly used in construction and maintenance.
Skill in mechanical aptitude.
Ability to perform a variety of construction and repair tasks; operate trucks and mechanical equipment such as jack hammers, paint sprayers, portable pumps, air compressors, and air and electric powered tools; follow blueprints and engineering sketches; work holidays, weekends, after hours, and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions while exposed to the elements; follow written and oral directions; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public.
Special Conditions & Requirements: Employees in this classification who are required by applicable laws and regulations to have respiratory protection, shall comply with the American National Standards Institute’s requirements on Practices for Respiratory Protection; possess and maintain physical condition required to perform essential functions of the classification which include the physical ability to: lift, pull, lower, and carry considerable amounts of weight (for weight in excess of 50 pounds, tools or other appropriate assistance are recommended to perform the function); bend in all directions; climb ladders; stoop; kneel; reach; twist; squeeze with arms and hands; stand for extended periods of time.
Education/Training: One year of recent paid full-time experience in general construction and maintenance work, or as a helper in the construction and repair trades, which shall have been at a higher skill level than that of laborer.
License & Certificates: A valid California Class “C” driver’s license or equivalent at time of appointment; may be required to possess a valid California Class “B” driver’s license or equivalent at time of appointment if necessary for needs of City. All required licenses and certificates must be maintained throughout employment in this classification.
