We're looking for an enthusiastic Environmental Education Specialist to help grow our public education and outreach program. About us :

Public awareness is one of the most important components to the City's stormwater program. To help us spread the stormwater knowledge the City joined Stormwater SMART, a cooperative partnership of counties and other municipalities in the Piedmont region with the goal of providing education and outreach concerning stormwater, water quality and conservation issues.

Stormwater SMART is governed by a Steering Committee, on which the City sits, that is composed of representatives from each county or municipal partner. The Steering Committee helps guide Stormwater SMART staff members in targeting audiences and events for environmental education programs each year.

What you will do :

The City of Burlington Stormwater Division seeks an enthusiastic Environmental Education and Outreach Specialist to develop and implement a dynamic K-adult environmental education program focused on stormwater management and environmental topics. Reporting to the Stormwater Manager, this role involves sharing water quality education with audiences of all ages.

Examples of Duties

Develop and implement a K-Adult education program supporting the City of Burlington Stormwater Division.
Partner with schools and clubs on environmental projects that have a water quality component.
Build and maintain professional relationships with teachers in the community who can help further water quality education amongst students (train the teacher programs).
Facilitate lessons for elementary, middle, and high school science and environmental classes.
Develop a menu of educational activities that correlates to school curriculum.
Develop and implement a public education and outreach program supporting the City of Burlington Stormwater Division.

Provide public outreach and education at community events such as fairs and festivals.

Coordinate, plan, and facilitate environmental camp programs.

Partner with schools and clubs on environmental projects that have a water quality component.

Partner with community members for environmental volunteer opportunities.

Represent the City of Burlington Stormwater Division at Stormwater SMART meetings.

Identify and develop partnerships with other local, regional, state, or national organizations to further expand environmental programming related to stormwater.

Assist in the creation and execution of marketing and public outreach programs aimed at increasing public awareness of stormwater issues.

Assist with website content management.

Provide graphic design assistance for digital and print campaigns.

Assist with division photography and videography efforts.

Assist in the development of internal communications campaigns to increase employee engagement in Burlington's Stormwater Division.

Qualifications

Technical Skills & Expertise :

Proficient in Adobe Suite and Microsoft Office for documentation, reporting, and presentations.

Skilled in GIS applications and data analysis for environmental and stormwater mapping.

General computer proficiency for preparing reports, completing forms, and reading maps.

Compliance :

Knowledgeable in stormwater regulations at local, state, and federal levels.

Environmental Knowledge :

Strong understanding of stormwater policies, environmental issues, and conservation science.

Familiar with the regional environmental and conservation landscape, ensuring compliance and sustainability.

Communication & Collaboration :

Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Ability to work independently while maintaining efficiency and accountability.

Experienced in building relationships with the public, city employees, and environmental professionals.

Adept at handling public interactions with tact, courtesy, and professionalism.

Minimum Qualifications :

High School Diploma or GED Equivalency and 2 years experience in education and outreach, marketing, communications, public relations, or environmental studies / science related field with 2 years developing or instructing programs for the k-12 environment or equivalent.

Valid Driver's License.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions :

Work in this class is described as medium and frequently requires physical exertion to complete tasks.

Work typically involves the ability to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions.

Work necessitates visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned in preparing and analyzing figures, accounting, transcription, computer terminal viewing and extensive reading.

Employee is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions, including extreme heat and extreme cold.

Inclement Weather Classification : Non-Essential

The City of Burlington does not offer benefits to part-time positions which require less than 1000 work hours per calendar year.
