The Burlington Fire Department strives to develop a safety-oriented community. The Department is made up of three divisions: Emergency Response, Community Risk Reduction, and Support Services Divisions.
What you will do:
The trainee position is an entry-level role focused on developing the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to become a NC Certified Firefighter and NC Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Employees in this class are in training and have not yet completed the required certifications (NC Firefighter 1 & 2, and EMT). Trainees will attend scheduled classes to obtain the necessary qualifications for certification and advancement to a Firefighter/EMT position, where they will be prepared to provide emergency response and care.Fire Academy & EMT Training Participation
- Engage in Fire Academy and/or EMT Academy training programs, as well as on-the-job training activities.
- Participate in drills with trainee and engine/truck company members to develop hands-on firefighting skills.
- Learn the proper procedures for fire response, including laying hose lines, directing water streams, and carrying and setting up ladders.
- Gain proficiency in operating motorized equipment, ventilating buildings, performing rescues, and minimizing water damage during post-fire clean-up.
- Master the procedures and techniques for rendering emergency medical aid to those in need.
- Learn how to clean, service, and maintain firefighting apparatus and motorized equipment.
- Test, wash, and inspect hoses and other equipment to ensure proper functioning.
- Commit to following all applicable safety protocols to ensure personal and team safety during training and operations.
- Meet the department's established criteria for performance at each training level to advance to the next stage of certification.
- Occasionally drive city vehicles to transport supplies, equipment, or attend training exercises as required.
Relationship Building: Capable of establishing and maintaining strong working relationships with fire department personnel, city staff, and the public to foster a collaborative and supportive environment.
Certification and Skill Development: Committed to learning and developing the necessary skills required to successfully pass certification tests for NC Certified Firefighter and NC Emergency Medical Technician.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school/GED equivalent. No prior experience is required for this position.
- Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
- Certification as a firefighter or EMT is not a prerequisite, as training will be provided to obtain these certifications. Individuals who already hold firefighter or EMT certification are also encouraged to apply, but it is not a requirement for consideration.
- Valid NC driver’s license
- Ability to obtain NC Class B license for operation of fire apparatus is required in time as employees of this class advance.
- Work in this position is heavy work, requiring exertion of in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- This employee must have the visual acuity to be the operator of a truck and other equipment.
- Work in this class is described as strenuous and frequently requires physical exertion to complete tasks and move objects.
- Work typically involves the ability to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions.
- This employee must have the visual acuity to be the operator of a truck and other equipment.
- An employee is subject to noise, vibration, and hazards including a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working in high places, exposure to high heat, and exposure to chemicals.
- The employee is subject to atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin, oils, noise and may be exposed to blood when providing emergency medical services. The employee is required to wear a respirator.
- This employee is frequently in close quarters and areas which could cause claustrophobia.
- Working conditions include both inside and outside environmental conditions, including extreme heat and extreme cold.
