About Us:
The City of Burlington seeks a highly motivated student with an interest in government administration to serve as its Summer Management Intern. This position aims to expose the intern to various aspects of local government work and provide meaningful experience on relevant projects. The intern will assist the City Manager’s Office, Finance, and Legal Departments, among others, with identified assignments.
What You Will Do:
In this position, you will complete varied work assignments, including research, analysis, interviews, job shadowing, attending meetings, providing customer service, and completing a capstone project on a mutually beneficial topic.
- Research & Analysis: Conduct research and analysis to support various projects.
- Interviews & Job Shadowing: Participate in interviews and job shadowing experiences to gain insight into city operations.
- Meeting Attendance: Attend meetings across various departments to understand decision-making processes.
- Customer Service: Provide customer service as needed and collaborate with different teams.
- Capstone Project: Work on a final project that benefits both the intern and the City.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma and current enrollment at an accredited university or community college.
- A self-starter with a positive attitude who works well with others and consistently produces high-quality work.
- Reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Completion of introductory courses in government budgeting and performance management.
- Enrollment in an MPA or MPP program, or relevant undergraduate coursework with a strong interest in pursuing a career in local government.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- This is a sedentary position, requiring exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
- Work may involve setting up rooms, providing and arranging refreshments, stocking shelves, and similar activities.
- Visual acuity is required to prepare and analyze data and figures, as well as operate a computer.
