About us:
The Water and Sewer Pipe Maintenance division is located at 1103 Mebane Street in Burlington. The Water & Sewer Pipe Maintenance division was established in 1907 to maintain the city water system. The system presently serves approximately 30,000 Water and Sewer accounts through a distribution system containing over 2,500,000 feet of pipe and a collection system which has over 2,000,000 feet of pipe.
What you will do:
An employee in this class performs routine manual work in providing safe and attractive structures, facilities, and grounds for use by City workers and staff. Work is performed under the supervision of a Maintenance Supervisor.Valve Maintenance:
- Inspects and operates water and wastewater valves by turning them on and off with a valve key or wrench.
- Reports necessary valve replacements to the supervisor for prompt action.
- Digs, patches, and backfills pavement or grounds using tools like shovels, dump trucks, jackhammers, and tamps.
- Assists in repairing water and wastewater main breaks, including digging pavement, cutting or clamping pipes, and backfilling.
- Operates dump trucks to transport debris, mud, and backfill materials to and from worksites.
- Performs landscaping tasks, including mowing with riding and push mowers, trimming and pruning trees and shrubs, and removing trees as necessary.
- Clears snow from sidewalks and applies ice-melting materials to ensure safety.
- Conducts general maintenance on vehicles and buildings to ensure proper functionality.
- Undertakes other related duties as assigned to support team operations effectively.
- Familiar with the maintenance work commonly performed by a municipality.
- Well-versed in the equipment, facilities, methods, and procedures involved in maintenance and repair operations.
- Skilled in operating a range of maintenance tools and machinery, including mowers, tractors, dump trucks, leaf blowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, tamps, jackhammers, and similar equipment.
- Proficient in applying seed and straw, fertilizing, mowing, shoveling, raking, and setting up proper signage to ensure safety and crew visibility.
- Capable of exercising sound judgment and working independently when traveling between and performing tasks at assigned worksites.
- Adept at following oral and written instructions provided by supervisors.
- Attentive to maintenance needs and able to effectively identify and report issues with structures, grounds, and facilities.
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal abilities, fostering positive relationships with City employees and the general public.
- High school Diploma or GED equivalency
- Valid North Carolina Driver's License
- Knowledge and experience using hand tools
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Work in this class is described as medium and frequently requires physical exertion to complete tasks and moving objects.
- Work typically involves the ability to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, hearing, talking and repetitive motions.
- The employee is required to have visual acuity to operate machines such as lathes, drill presses or power saws and mills where the seeing job is at or within arm's reach, performs mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive natures such as carpenters, technicians, service people, plumbers, painters, and mechanics.
- Employee is subject to hazards including physical conditions with proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, exposure to chemicals, noise, and atmospheric conditions.
- Employee is frequently exposed to work in close quarters, crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, small, enclosed rooms, water lines, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia and is required to function in narrow aisles or passageways.
