About us :
The Water and Sewer Pipe Maintenance division is located at 1103 Mebane Street in Burlington. The Water & Sewer Pipe Maintenance division was established in 1907 to maintain the city water system. The system presently serves approximately 30,000 Water and Sewer accounts through a distribution system containing over 2,500,000 feet of pipe and a collection system which has over 2,000,000 feet of pipe.
What you will do :
An employee in this class performs routine manual work in providing safe and attractive structures, facilities, and grounds for use by City workers and staff. Work is performed under the supervision of a Maintenance Supervisor. This classification is considered non-exempt in compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Examples of Duties
Valve Operation and Maintenance
- Checks the operation of water and wastewater valves by manually turning them on and off using a valve key or wrench.
- Reports any necessary valve replacements to the immediate supervisor to ensure smooth system operation.
Excavation and Repair Support
Debris and Material Handling
Landscaping and Grounds Maintenance
Winter Weather Duty
Vehicle and Facility Maintenance

Qualifications
Municipal Maintenance Knowledge : Solid understanding of general maintenance work performed by municipalities, ensuring effective and efficient operations.
Equipment and Procedure Expertise : Familiar with the equipment, facilities, methods, and procedures used in maintenance and repair activities, enabling seamless work execution.
Skilled Equipment Operation : Capable of operating a range of maintenance equipment including mowers, tractors, dump trucks, leaf blowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, tampers, jackhammers, and more.
Landscaping and Grounds Maintenance : Skilled in applying seed and straw, fertilizing, mowing, shoveling, raking, and setting up proper signage to safely indicate active work zones.
Independent Judgment and Action : Able to exercise judgment and independence while traveling between worksites, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and safely.
Instruction Follow-Through : Able to follow oral and written instructions from the supervisor, ensuring tasks are executed correctly and on time.
Maintenance Awareness and Reporting : Capable of identifying maintenance needs for various structures, grounds, and facilities, and reporting them to a supervisor for prompt attention.
Interpersonal Skills : Adept at establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with City employees and the general public, ensuring smooth collaboration and service delivery.
