**For Lateral Transfer - Service Credit is given at 50% for entry into Step Plan.**

Shift schedules are 48 on/96 off

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the assigned supervisor, the Firefighter/EMT position responds to emergency fire, rescue and medical incidents; provides support functions, including vehicle and equipment maintenance, emergency responses, records and reporting duties, and emergency medical treatment including but not limited to medical emergencies, trauma emergencies and inter facility transports. Additionally, this position is expected to plan, organize, direct and control fire/rescue and medical service functions within applicable laws, codes, rules and regulations. This position is expected to provide emergency firefighting, rescue and basic level medical care to the residents of the community. All Fire department staff have frequent contact with outside emergency response agencies, other city or department staff, and the general public.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides fire suppression, rescue and emergency medical services for the city;
  • Perform basic firefighting operations including but not limited to: Respond to fire alarms; drive fire apparatus, ambulance and other auxiliary equipment; lay and connect hose; hold nozzles and directs fog or water streams; raise and climb ladders; use fire extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines and other equipment.
  • Acts as a first responder to all types of emergency situations
  • May from time to time be assigned primary duties as an emergency medical technician basic on 911 or transport ambulance.
  • Responds to all rescue calls.
  • Ensures that equipment is always fully prepared and functional.
  • Performs general maintenance and upkeep of apparatus, equipment and fire station.
  • Performs and documents required equipment inspections as assigned.
  • Participates in preventative maintenance on fire apparatus, and station maintenance.
  • Participates in pre-fire planning, fire prevention inspections, fire prevention and fire safety education
  • Memorize City facilities, streets, hydrants, sprinkler connections, and FD key boxes.
  • Prepares various reports and other documents.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Professional Development - This function requires the employee to successfully complete training and continuing education as required by professional standards and the City in a timely manner as required by City and State mandates.
  • Demonstrate high ethical standards, trustworthiness, and personal integrity.
  • Regular attendance, dependability, and promptness are required for the work shift or agreed upon hours 100% of the time, to ensure consistency and completeness of department's processes.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply emergency medical care to the basic level.
  • Knowledge of fire suppression and rescue practices.
  • Knowledge of fire prevention, principles, methods, and practices
  • Knowledge of all applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, codes, ordinances, and statutes that may be related to the functions, duties and responsibilities of this position.
  • Knowledge of standard office practices and procedures.
  • Ability to proficiently perform fire suppression and rescue activities.
  • Ability to deliver pre-hospital emergency medical care to the basic level of certification.
  • Ability to operate computers and utilize various computer software programs such as Microsoft word and other programs related to the position duties.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public.
  • Ability to develop, organize, motivate and effectively utilize staff.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to read and interpret manuals, policies, and other documents.
  • Ability to receive direction both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate fire suppression equipment.
  • Ability to operate medical equipment.

REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND EDUCATION:

  • High school graduation or its equivalent
  • One year experience as a certified Firefighter and EMT Basic preferred. Candidates must have a Fire certification to be considered.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) or International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) certified Structural Firefighter is required.
  • Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) as an EMT-B;
  • Completion of a FEMA certified National Incident Management (NIMS) course or equivalent.
  • Valid Class B Texas commercial driver's License (CDL) or the ability to acquire within six months

This position works in emergency conditions that may involve extreme danger and exertion under hazardous conditions to include but not limited to flames, smoke, hazardous materials, cramped conditions, charged or oxygen deficient atmospheres, downed power lines, victims with severe injuries/death and inclement weather. Employee will generally be assigned to rotating shifts, consisting of 48 hours on duty followed by 96 hours off duty. Some assignments of day shifts, consisting of 40-hour workweeks, typically eight hours per day, may be required.

This position must be able to wear all assigned bunker gear and perform related emergency scene duties effectively and efficiently. The incumbent must be able to frequently lift and carry heavy weights, climb, walk, run, drive vehicles, crawl, stoop, push, pull, jump, grasp hoses, grasp and manipulate small objects, work on unsteady footing and use other emergency and firefighting equipment as required. Must have the ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 165 with or without assistance. Must be able to see in the normal visual range with or without correction and have a level of vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents and to operate equipment. Incumbent must be able to hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
