Job Description:
Responds to emergency fire, rescue and medical incidents; provides support functions, including vehicle and equipment maintenance, emergency responses, records and reporting duties, and emergency medical treatment including but not limited to medical emergencies, trauma emergencies and inter facility transports. Assists with fire/rescue and medical service functions within applicable laws, codes, rules and regulations.
Job Responsibilities/Duties:
- Performs fire prevention, suppression, and rescue activities
- Responds to fire alarms
- Communicates with dispatcher and safety personnel in person and via two-way radio.
- Performs emergency or other medical care functions; responds to rescue calls
- Operates ambulance and provides emergency medical treatment to injured and ill persons (e.g., provides bandaging, administers oxygen and CPR)
- Removes persons from emergency situations
- Maintains radio communication with hospital
- Performs all duties according to certification standards as set forth by the State of Texas.
- Cleans, repairs, and maintains facility and equipment
- Checks equipment and performs tasks to ensure proper operation of emergency and firefighting equipment
- Conducts equipment inventory as needed
- Performs general yard work around station (e.g., mows grass, trims shrubs, etc.) and cleans and maintains station.
- Prepares and submits records, reports, or other documentation as required (e.g., fire reports, EMS run reports, inspections, medications administered, etc.).
- Performs public relations activities; communicates with citizens in the public when required; conducts station tours.
- Maintains high standard of professional appearance, attitude, and customer service at all times.
- Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
- Must demonstrate regular and predictable attendance
- Attends professional education and training sessions, seminars and workshops, as assigned
- Maintains required licenses and certifications.
Minimum Requirements, Certificates & Licenses:
- High school graduation or its equivalent; prefer a minimum of one year experience as an EMT Basic and one year experience as a Firefighter, paramedic preferred.
OR
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) or International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) certified Structural Firefighter;
- Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) as an EMT-B;
- Completion of a FEMA certified National Incident Management (NIMS) course or equivalent;
- Valid Texas motor vehicle operator's license
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Emergency medical care to the basic level, fire suppression and rescue practices, fire prevention, principles, methods, and practices.
- Local codes related to emergencies; state statutes, city ordinances, and criminal law.
- Standard office practices and procedures.
- Perform fire suppression and rescue activities, pre-hospital emergency medical care to the basic level of certification, operate computers, including word processing and spreadsheet software.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Read and interpret manuals, policies, and other documents.
- Operate fire suppression equipment, operate medical equipment.
- Recognize life threatening and emergency situations and take appropriate action.
- Exercise sound judgment.
- Carry out instructions in written, oral, picture, or schedule form.
- Cooperate with co-workers on group projects.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers; supervisors, and the general public.
- Demonstrate physical fitness.
- Work under hazardous and stressful conditions.
- Diagnose equipment malfunctions and take appropriate corrective action.
- Communicate effectively.
- Prepare and maintain accurate documentation.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 165 pounds with or without assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
