GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Duties include: Installation and repair of water and sewer lines; making water or sewer taps; maintaining waterworks apparatus; operating various equipment and machinery; must be willing to work overtime and be on call at certain times. The desired individual for the position must be hard working and be able to assist the Public Works Department in day-to-day and after-hours work/activities. This is a full-time position with the requirement to work overtime when needed.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Performs the daily operations of the Water Distribution/Wastewater Collection Field Operations; assures that all actions are completed safely.
- Installs, maintains, or repairs water and sewer
- Conducts utility maintenance and repair utilizing equipment, materials, and tools required to complete work orders; inspects water lines and sewer pipes.
- Collects necessary materials, tools, equipment and instructions before arriving at the job site.
- Performs work assignments; follow all city and departmental regulations and safety requirements.
- Contributes to work site actions to assure that safety rules and regulations are followed, and that the work zone, traffic control, and all equipment are in safe operating condition.
- Operates tools and equipment in accordance with all safety guidelines.
- Utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; reports problems and emergency situations; recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents, and injuries.
- Responds during normal hours and after hours.
- Supports the relationship between the City of Burnet and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; and maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information.
- Checks ground water storage tanks for water
- Read WaterMeters
- Demonstrate high ethical standards, trustworthiness, and personal integrity. Regular attendance, dependability, and promptness are required for the scheduled workday or agreed upon hours 100% of the time, to ensure consistency and completeness of department's processes.
- Performs such other duties as may be assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to:
- Work after hours, weekends and holidays (scheduled and nonscheduled)
- Obtain a Grade D Distribution and/or Class I Wastewater Collection License issued by the TCEQ within six (6) months of employment.
- Respond to after hour emergencies as needed within one hour of notification.
- Perform rotating on-call duty and rotating shifts as needed.
Knowledge of:
- Principles, practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in public utility maintenance.
- Safety standards for light/heavy equipment operations and other safety requirements needed to maintain and repair W/WW infrastructure.
- Knowledge of Excel and Word programs.
Skill in:
- Completing maintenance and repair work orders.
- Reading and interpreting plans, schematics, and specifications.
- Following directions of supervisor.
- Troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining water, wastewater, water meters, and specialty equipment and control systems.
- Promoting and enforcing safe work practices.
Relationship Skills
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to perform tasks effectively and efficiently.
- Ability to plan and schedule work and implement directives without constant supervision.
- Ability to present a professional appearance and conduct when representing the City.
- Ability to work cooperatively and productively with supervisor, individuals, co-workers, and groups of persons at all levels of activity, contributing to a strong spirit of teamwork.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, other agencies and the general public using tact, courtesy and good judgment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- High school diploma or GED
Experience:
- Minimum of 0-2 years of general maintenance experience
Special Requirements
- Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License.
- Class B Texas State Commercial Driver's License without an "E" restriction is preferred but not required for this position.
- Must be able to pass drug screening and background check.
Additional Requirements
- Regular attendance and reliability are critical to City operations.
- Must maintain required TX DL with an insurable record while employed.

This position works in all types of weather conditions and will be required to report to work in emergency situations. Work is performed at outdoors work sites. City approved safety shoes must be worn.
