Position Details
The City of Burnsville is seeking a Tree Inspector to assist Forestry staff in managing the city’s urban forest on both public and private property.
Our Public Works Department is a team of talented individuals who work to keep our city running smoothly and efficiently in order to make our community a truly desirable place to live and work.
This role is non-exempt (hourly) and has a wage of $24.02/hr. This is a 6-month seasonal position approximately May-October. Must be available to work Monday-Friday 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Learn more about the Tree Inspector position here.
How you'll use your strengths every day
The Tree Inspector values people and perspectives by:
- Collaborating with City staff and residents to enforce existing tree ordinances.
- Working with residents to have infested trees removed and replaced.
They are on the leading edge when they:
- Regularly update the City's GIS-based inventory and website.
- Prepare forestry-related articles and publications for community education.
They expect the best by:
- Assisting Forestry staff with tree work within the city while following best management practices and safety standards.
- Improving the health and canopy coverage of Burnsville's urban forest.
What you'll bring to help you be successful
- Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Must be 18 years of age or older by the first day of work.
- Currently enrolled in, or a graduate of, a forestry, natural resources, horticulture, or closely related degree program.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Tree Inspector License, or the ability to obtain one within one month of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with the public and City employees both orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of various biotic and abiotic tree disorders, including emerald ash borer, oak wilt, and Dutch elm disease.
- Proficiency with GPS and GIS systems, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Office Suite.
