Open Position - Code Inspector

Job Summary:

The Code Inspector will inspect new construction and repair or renovations to existing construction of buildings and structures and participate in the issuance of building perm its. The officer performs general visual inspections of residential and commercial properties for property maintenance and zoning code compliance. Enforces the property maintenance codes and ordinances for compliance relating to trash in the alleys, tall grass and weeds, and exterior conditions of the property.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Inspects new construction and repairs or renovations to existing construction of buildings and structures for compliance with building codes and regulations
• As certified, issues building, plumbing, electrical, and other permits for building projects
• Evaluates construction plans and materials to be used in construction projects
• Notifies builders and architects of variances and instances where plans or constructions are not in compliance with City codes or regulations; provides general guidance and information on resolution
• Follows up to ensure that violations are corrected in accordance with codes and regulations
• Drafts and distributes reports of inspection findings; maintains records of reports and findings consistent with Department policies
• Confirms that land usage and construction projects comply with zoning, health, and safety regulations
• Maintains knowledge of zoning, health, safety, and building codes and regulations
• Performs other duties as required

Qualifications and Educations Requirements

• Extensive knowledge of construction, engineering, and building codes and regulations
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
• Ability to write clear inspection reports on the condition of properties
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software
• High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor's degree, or working towards degree in Architecture, Construction, ore related field desirable
• Building Inspector certification preferred
• Relates inspector experience in municipal or private industry environment required

Skills must Include

• Knowledge of Calumet City Codes and Ordinance

Additional Notes

• Must be physically able to inspect construction sites including walking properties, climbing ladders, and kneeling
• Must be able to list up to 25 pounds at a time
