ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:


The City of Cambridge Traffic, Parking, and Transportation Department (TP T) supports the safety and health of the Cambridge community by creating and sustaining a high-quality street and parking system that supports a range of transportation options for all who live, travel, visit, and park in Cambridge.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:


Reporting to the Supervising Engineer in the Street Management Division, the Traffic Engineer provides traffic engineering support for the daily operations of the Engineering unit, relating to pavement markings, traffic signs, traffic signals, traffic controls, parking meters, studies, and other tasks as assigned.

This position oversees the planning and coordination of the installation of pavement markings Citywide, as well as related transportation infrastructure on City streets. The Traffic Engineer also assists with routine maintenance of traffic control devices and helps develop plans for new or improved transportation facilities.

Other duties include: Conduct investigations relating to traffic controls and public inquiries; support the Department’s customer service goals in relation to a timely and professional response to the needs of the community, elected officials and other city departments; attend public meetings; and attend internal meetings in the absence of the Supervising Engineer.

Primary responsibilities include:


  • Oversee the installation and routine maintenance of the citywide pavement marking program, including all 2,000 crosswalks and 15 miles of long lines. Includes overnight work hours for supervision of night work.
  • Oversee and assist with the layout of new pavement markings, including new roadway configurations associated with bicycle facilities, bus priority, and new development, as well as locations that have been recently repaved.
  • Schedule both city and contractor crews for the installation of traffic control devices.
  • Work with other engineers and planners to develop plans for new or improved roadway designs.
  • Prepare work orders and punch lists for both city staff and contractors for the installation, improvement, and maintenance of traffic control devices.
  • Ensure private development and contractor work relating to traffic controls within the public way are correct and reviewed prior to acceptance or completion of work.
  • Review basic roadway construction and design plans relating to traffic controls.
  • Review curb cut applications and construction management plans.
  • Conduct traffic studies including speed studies; traffic, pedestrian, and bicycle counts; turning movement counts; manual classification counts; crash studies, and other data collection efforts as required to support traffic engineering studies and roadway design projects.
  • Coordinate tasks for the department intern/cooperative education student and Engineering Technicians and review their work products.
  • Prepare basic purchasing requests for traffic controls devices, including, but not limited to, signs, pavement markings, and flex posts. Includes both service and supply contracts with outside vendors.
  • Review and approve invoices for contracts.
  • Prepare simple plans and graphics for public communications.


Other specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:


  • Assist with the metal sign program, including all regulatory, guide, and warning signs and poles.
  • Assist with the installation and maintenance of flexible delineator posts and concrete curbing for transportation facilities.
  • Assist with the parking meter program, including single-space and multi-space meters.
  • Supervise the signal contractor in the absence of the Senior Traffic Engineer or Supervising Engineer.
  • Assist with the oversight of the department's vehicle fleet.
  • Inspect and diagnose basic traffic signal problems.
  • Mark out underground traffic signal utilities (i.e. DigSafe)
  • Assist with snow emergency traffic operations during major events.
  • Represent the Department at monthly Pedestrian and/or Bicycle Committee evening meetings.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:


Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related field required. Three to five years of experience in the transportation engineering field preferred. Must be able to conduct tasks with little supervision and have good oral and written communication skills. Must be well organized and able to manage multiple responsibilities. Ability to convey complex technical information to the public in a timely and professional manner. Ability to understand traffic engineering plans.

Engineer-in-Training (EIT) license preferred. Excellent computer skills required and familiarity with AutoCAD and GIS strongly preferred. Massachusetts Class D driver’s license required. Experience with riding a bicycle or micromobility device preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:


Work involves frequent site visits, requiring travelling to and through active construction zones. Work indoors is in a professional office setting. Work outdoors includes construction sites and congested city roadways under all weather conditions. Supervising Engineer may adjust work hours to cover operational needs. Position is in-person, with hybrid schedule/telework allowed subject to the provisions of the City’s Telework Policy.
