The Police Officer Trainee is a non-sworn member of the Department who will attend a POST-Certified Basic Police Academy. Upon graduation from the Academy, the Trainee will be sworn in as a Police Officer and begin serving the 18 month probationary period. U pon appointment to the position of Police Officer, the monthly salary will be increased to the first step of the Police Officer salary range.

  • Follow instructions;

  • Perform repeated strenuous physical exertion;
  • Write reports and correspondence;
  • Communicate effectively orally;
  • Communicate with all types of people; and
  • Meet State of California POST medical and physical standards for law enforcement personnel.

Example of Duties

Typical duties will include, but are not limited to :

  • Upon appointment, will be required to attend and successfully complete and graduate from a POST Basic Police Academy;
  • Must participate in and pass all required classes at the academy;
  • May be required to ride on patrol as an observer;
  • May be required to perform other non sworn duties as required.
  • Enforces Federal, State and Municipal laws and ordinances;
  • Performs patrol duties in cars, on motorcycles or bicycles, and on foot as required;
  • Enforces State and local traffic laws to regulate traffic, and investigates accidents;
  • Answers calls for service and the protection of life and property;
  • Makes arrests as required and testifies in court; performs crime prevention duties and community relations activities;
  • Interfaces with all City departments to insure the utmost service to the citizens of Campbell;
  • Prepares reports;
  • Services and maintains departmental equipment; and
  • May relieve or assist Records or Communications personnel.
  • Qualifications

    Education and Experience :

  • Completion of 40 semester units or 60 quarter units from an accredited college or university (college units must be completed at time of application).
  • Successful completion and graduation from POST Basic Police Academy will be required within six months from date of hire which will provide 21 additional college level units.
  • No experience necessary.
  • Ability to :

  • Learnlaws of arrest and pertinent local, State and other laws;
  • Reasonably interpret the technical concepts of law;
  • Use and care for firearms;
  • Observe and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents, and places and judge situations and persons accurately;
  • Work without exacting supervision;
  • Operate a police mobile and portable radio;
  • Prepare accurate police reports.
  • Possession of : Valid California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment.

    Additional Requirements :

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States under Federal Law.
  • At least 20.5 years of age at the date of application and age 21 by date of appointment.
  • Physical capacity to meet standards established by the City of Campbell.
  • Must have at least 20 / 40 uncorrected vision accessed for both eyes together. Must meet POST physical standards.
  • Probationary Period : Upon date of hire and 18 months following the date of swearing in as a Police Officer.

  • Submit a passing National Testing Network Frontline law enforcement test ( with reading and writing scores of 70% or higher and video score of 65% or higher ) at the time of application;

    Self-Scheduling a Written Test

    All applicants are responsible for scheduling their own written test. The City of Campbell accepts the PELLETB or the National Testing Network (NTN) for the written test requirement.

  • TESTING PROCESS Following initial screening of applications and supplemental questions, those applicants with the most appropriate qualifications will be invited to continue in the selection process. BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION AND POLYGRAPH TEST An intensive background investigation will be conducted on each final candidate in accordance with the Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission Peace Officer Background Investigations Guidelines. Candidates will also be required to successfully pass a polygraph test administered by a licensed polygrapher, a psychological exam given by a City-selected psychologist and a medical exam by a City physician (to include a stress test EKG, Audiogram test, Pulmonary Function Test, x-ray, and general physical examination). The results of the psychological exam are valid for one year. Suitability for employment will also be based on the following POST job dimensions : problem-solving ability, learning ability, observation skills, willingness to confront problems, interest in people, interpersonal sensitivity, desire for self-improvement, dependability, integrity, credibility as a witness in a court of law, communication skills, judgment under pressure and physical ability.

  • Retirement : CalPERS - Formula dependent on hire date and member status in CalPERS. Please see our for more information.
  • Health Insurance : Effective January 1, 2024, the monthly Cafeteria Plan Allowance will be based on selected level of coverage, as follows : Employee Only Coverage : $986.84; Employee Plus One Coverage : $1,973.68, Employee Plus Family : $2,565.78 to use towards a CalPERS medical plan or cash out opt : $750 / month.
  • Vision / Dental Insurance : The City pays the monthly premium for employees and their eligible dependents through VSP and Delta Dental.
  • Deferred Compensation : City contributes $20 per pay period Mission Square Retirement 457 Plan available.
  • For CPOA members the City will contribute $20 per pay period towards a Section 457 deferred compensation plan for each member who matches this City contribution by making their own contribution of $20 per pay period to a Section 457 account. The member's match of $20 per pay period required by this section must be above and beyond any existing contribution the member is already making to a Section 457 account, unless the member's contribution would result in the member's account exceeding annual contribution limits.
  • VEBA Plan (Voluntary Employee Benefit Association) : City contributes $170 per pay period
  • Vacation : Accruals are based on length of service. Employees can earn 11-21 days of vacation based on years of service.
  • Sick : Accrued at an unlimited rate of 3.69 hours of sick leave per pay period.
  • Holiday : In exchange for holiday pay, members in CPOA will receive 5.4% in lieu pay. New employees receive the appropriate prorated portion of this entitlement upon hire.
  • Uniform Allowance : $1,100 / year. New employees receive the appropriate prorated portion of this entitlement upon hire.
  • Life Insurance : $50,000 $50,000 AD&D Life Rate is .27 cents per $1,000 : AD&D rate is .04 cents per $1,000
