Street Maintenance Lead Worker

The City of Campbell’s Public Works Department is seeking a Street Maintenance Lead Worker to integrate with our current staff. The ideal candidate for this position will not only have the technical knowledge pertaining to street maintenance and construction, they will also have strong leadership skills and the ability to focus on employee development. The Street Maintenance Lead Worker will be responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of our City streets, storm drains, traffic control devices, street markings, and other related public works facilities. The ideal candidate should also demonstrate a willingness to continue learning, implement new ideas, and help the department grow and evolve.

The Position: 
Under general supervision, assigns and supervises the work of and participates with personnel engaged in the maintenance, repair and upkeep of streets, storm sewers, traffic control devices, and related facilities; performs skilled maintenance work and monitors, on a daily basis, the condition of assigned areas; and does related work as required.

Typical duties will include, but are not limited to: 

• Receives and implements work plans and makes assignments in order to provide for the continuing maintenance and upkeep of streets, storm drains, traffic control and informational devices, and related facilities; 
• Provides direct supervision of a work crew and participates in a variety of tasks including traffic sign and legend repair and installation, sign fabrication, street and sidewalk removal, repair and reconstruction, street sanitation and storm sewer maintenance; 
• Estimates and orders materials for routine repairs, per Division policy; 
• Operates, maintains and trains others in the operation of construction equipment including rollers and asphalt breakers, airless and air operated paint machines, air compressors, dump trucks, backhoes/front end loaders, street sweepers and generators; 
• Monitors the condition of streets and storm sewers on an ongoing basis; 
• Monitors routine work performed by contractors; 
• Maintains daily records and prepares maintenance schedules and routine reports; 
• Investigates complaints and deals regularly with the general public; 
• Evaluates the performance of assigned staff; 
• May be required to work weekends and holidays; 
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Four years of responsible experience in related public works maintenance and/or directly related construction or maintenance experience. Supervisory experience highly desirable. 

Knowledge of: 

• Methods, tools, materials and equipment used in all phases of street and traffic control maintenance; 
• Basic supervisory principles and safe work practices; 
• Techniques of safe and effective traffic control; 
• Materials used in construction and maintenance of streets, storm sewers and traffic control devices. 

Ability to: 

• Supervise and perform street maintenance activities; 
• Operate and maintain a variety of maintenance equipment; 
• Read and interpret plans and blueprints; 
• Understand and carry out oral and written instructions; 
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships, including working with volunteers; 
• Deal effectively with the public. 

Possession of: 

• Valid California Driver's License. 
• Class B Commercial Driver's License must be obtained within 120 days from appointment date.
