Position Summary: Under general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled building repair and maintenance tasks for the City of Cañon City.

  • Maintains, repairs and cleans public facilities and building systems including floors, walls, ceilings, windows, doors, hardware, roofs, concrete flatwork, steps, and rails.
  • Travels to various City buildings and locations to perform duties in compliance with established maintenance program and/or perform needed repairs.
  • Repairs or replaces simple plumbing and electrical devices, fittings, and appliances. Reviews manuals and plans to locate and maintain building systems.
  • Performs routine inspections of building, mechanical, water, and sewer systems.
  • Performs rough carpentry, refinishing and painting interior and exterior surfaces of public buildings and facilities.
  • Performs routine inspections of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
  • Changes belts, filters, and cleaning devices.
  • Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures and supply lines.
  • Repairs and maintains sewer lift stations, collection lines, ventilation lines, and manholes.
  • Repairs and replaces electrical pumps, motors, lamps, and fixtures.
  • Operates a wide variety of equipment and tools commonly used in facilities maintenance such as pick-up trucks, trailers, dump trucks, loaders, forklifts, electric saws, drills, cutters, impact hammers, nail guns, generators, jack hammers, buffers, floor washing devices, weed eaters, and lawn mowers.
  • Provides excellent customer service to external and internal customers including but not limited to effectively listening and communicating, providing accurate information, offering solutions, assisting in resolution, and ensuring timely follow up as needed.

  • Performs daily weekly, monthly and annual tasks such as sweeping, vacuuming, scrubbing, and buffing floors; cleaning walls, ceilings, appliances, and furnishings; and cleaning bathroom fixtures.

Requirements:

  • The mission, policies, goals and procedures of Cañon City relating to building use, maintenance, and repair.
  • The practices and methods of building maintenance and repair.
  • Safe use of hand tools and power tools such as electric saws, drills, cutters, impact hammers, nail guns, generators, buffers, and floor washing equipment.
  • Material Safety Data Sheets for hazardous materials used in building maintenance.
  • Repairing building components including HVAC, plumbing, and electrical equipment.
  • Performing building maintenance duties such as changing filters, fan belts, light bulbs, batteries, etc.
  • Using power tools and hand tools.
  • Performing carpentry and repairs on city facilities’ walls, steps, floors, ceilings, furniture, and fixtures.
  • Understanding and following spoken and/or written directions and/or diagrams.
  • Communicating with the public, co-workers, contractors, and vendors.
  • Cleaning toilets, sinks, walls, mirrors, counters, furniture, railings, and other fixtures.
  • Vacuuming carpets and cleaning/polishing floors and walkways.

Minimum Qualification(s):

Experience

  • At least two years of experience in building repair and maintenance or related field.

Education

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Valid Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record required

Any acceptable combination of education, training and experience that provides the listed knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted.

Preferred Qualification(s):

Experience

  • Basic electrical for low voltage experience
  • Basic HVAC experience

Physical Activities:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job the employee will travel within the City of Cañon City and Fremont County

  • Majority of work time will be indoors with some time spent outdoors, under varying noise levels.
  • Physical demands of job require some lifting, pulling, carrying and pushing of objects –approximately 50 pounds.
  • Frequent bending, simple grasping, finger/manual dexterity, standing, walking, twisting upper body, stooping, and hearing.
  • Often required to work with and around cleaning products and cleaning machinery.
  • Occasional climbing on stairs.
  • sometimes required to work in dirty and dusty locations, in high or cramped places, and in adverse weather conditions.
  • Communicates verbally with City staff, outside agencies and the public in one-on-one settings, group settings and over the telephone.

Additional Information

  • This position will typically work Monday – Friday but will flex to working weekends and evenings based on seasonal, organizational or event needs.
  • This position will be required to attend occasional City Council meetings and/or other meetings and events after normal work hours.
  • Travel within the City of Cañon City and Fremont County will be required.
  • Frequent extension of work day to meet deadlines.

The City of Cañon City, as a recipient of federal grant funds, maintains a strict drug-free workplace policy. The use, possession, or distribution of illegal drugs while on company property or performing job duties is prohibited and may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination. Although Marijuana and its derivatives, in some cases, are considered legal in the state of Colorado, they are still considered a Schedule I controlled substance under the Federal Drug Free Workplace Act (FDFWA), which makes there use, possession, or distribution illegal by City of Cañon City employees.
