This is an open examination. To be eligible for the position under this examination, all applicants must be U.S. citizens or have a permanent resident card. Applicants must be a High School graduate or possess a G.E.D, must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license.GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
An employee in this classification is responsible for supervising and coordinating the activities of personnel involved in collecting refuse and transporting refuse to disposal areas. The Route Supervisor assigns and inspects the work of the sanitation crews to ensure that sanitation standards are met. The employee is responsible for overseeing public relations on the routes and is responsible for handling confidential materials. The employee is responsible for the direction of work and manner of accomplishment of the departmental staff. The individual reports directly to the Superintendent of Sanitation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Three to five years of experience in refuse collection activities or a related public service field; High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent is required. Post-secondary education in a related field is preferred; Demonstration of supervisory or leadership experience preferred. A valid driver’s license is required, and a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) issued by the state of Ohio is preferred.
UNIQUE REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to supervise and coordinate the activities of personnel. Knowledge of the geographical areas of the City, including streets, alleys, and areas of town. Extensive knowledge of sanitary garbage and rubbish collection and disposal requirements and procedures. Knowledge of the policies and procedures involved in equipment management. Ability to coordinate all activities as needed for the completion of work assignments. Ability to prepare technical and administrative reports. Ability to analyze situations and develop workable solutions. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, department heads, City employees, other agencies, and the general public.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Performs supervisory, managerial, and administrative functions as described in the above General Statement of Duties. Is responsible for performing administrative tasks related to the supervision of personnel. Completes reports of daily work completion and paperwork for centralized personnel. Meets with the Superintendent of Sanitation to discuss work being completed and to establish priorities of the department. Recommends the purchase of equipment and supplies such as vehicles and dumpsters. Maintains the department's inventory of equipment and supplies in accordance with the City's procedures. Occasionally picks up vehicle parts for repair and maintenance. Inspects disabled vehicles and determines service requirements. Trains and counsels subordinate employees. Implements policies and procedures established by the administration. Identifies problems and potential problems, and recommends solutions to senior management. Provides detailed information and guidance to employees in personnel matters. Resolves employee complaints, grievances, and discipline according to the appropriate collective bargaining agreements and/or the City's policies and procedures. Coordinates efforts with various other departments. Works with the Department of Motor Vehicles regarding equipment and truck repair schedules; maintains communications with the Street/Sewer Department on areas in the City that need repair. Prepares and maintains records and reports that delineate the duties of the job. Must be available after normal hours in the event that his/her services are needed. Discusses operational and departmental problems with managers of other City organizations, employee groups, and individual employees. Communicates with citizens in the discussion of problems regarding refuse collection, personnel, and vehicle repair and maintenance, and determines appropriate courses of action in response to complaints.
