General Definition of Work
Performs work responsible for the necessary education to meet the minimum qualifications of Firefighter Cadet.
Essential Functions
● Responsible for performing tasks assigned through written policies and guidelines or verbal orders and directions. These tasks enable the candidate to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities to move up to the position of Firefighter/EMT. The primary focus and duty of the Cadet is to:
● Study, develop, practice and master the knowledge and skills necessary to obtain a Missouri FF I and II certification or IFSAC equivalent and Missouri EMT-B certification.
● Study, develop, practice and master the knowledge and skills laid forth in the department probationary firefighter task book.
● Performs at or above standards established by the department.
● Adheres to policies and procedures; helps to ensure that problems that arise are handled in a direct, timely and professional manner.
● Helps maintain a level of cooperation, coordination and communications with chief officers, captains, firefighters and each other to ensure the most effective, efficient, safe and professional delivery of services to the community as possible.
● Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
● Must be 18 years of age or older.
● High School graduate or equivalency is required.
● Must possess Missouri Emergency Medical Technician – Basic license within one year from date of employment. (Firefighter Cadets must possess either the EMT-B or FF l & ll certification prior to employment).
● Must be certified “Firefighter l and ll” (Missouri/NFPA Standard #1001) within one year of date of employment. (Firefighter Cadets must possess either the EMT-B or FF l & ll certification prior to employment).
Preferred Qualifications
● Associates degree or higher in a related field.
● Hold one or more certifications from the department’s List of Additional Certifications.
Salary per year $47,334.92 (Salary based on 2912 hours per year and Holiday Check), plus a generous benefit package.
- Bi-weekly pay periods.
- 14 hours of holiday hours per month - paid in a Holiday (lump sum) check in November/December.
- 191 hours of vacation – accrued throughout the year.
- 168 hours of sick leave – accrued throughout the year.
- City paid monthly premiums for health and dental insurance – Employee only.
- City paid monthly life insurance for employee only (1 times annual salary up to $50,000).
- Optional group term life insurance purchased at employee’s expense.
- Optional vision insurance purchased at employee’s expense.
- Voluntary deferred compensation plan – not matched by the City.

- Total compensation value (Hourly starting rate plus benefits value) for this position is $70,947 yearly.
