General Definition of Work
Performs work responsible for enforcing city animal control ordinances, enforcement of parking ordinances and abandoned vehicles regulations, ordinances pertaining to nuisances, including weed, trash and zoning violations as well as other health and safety issues for the City of Cape Girardeau.
Essential Functions
● Patrols for violations pertaining to animals, weeds, litter, parking, abandoned vehicles and nuisances.
● Issues citations or warnings for observed animal control, weeds, and litter, parking and nuisance ordinance violations.
● Investigates abandoned vehicles on public & private property; determines status of vehicles; attempts to contact owner; adheres tow notice to vehicle; tows the vehicle if not removed in 48 hours.
● Posts property locates owners and gives written notice to violators of weed abatement and litter ordinances.
● Investigates complaints and reports of animal violations, animal bites, cruelty to animals, weed, and litter violations.
● Impounds and controls domestic and wild, stray, injured and unwanted animals, reptiles and fowl.
● Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
● High school diploma or GED.
● Valid driver’s license.
● No felony convictions.
Salary per hour $17.15, plus a generous benefit package.
- Bi-weekly pay periods.
- Twelve paid holidays per year.
- 96 hours of vacation – accrued throughout the year.
- 96 hours of sick leave – accrued throughout the year.
- 2 days of personal leave per fiscal year. Must be employed on July 1 of the fiscal year to receive.
- City paid monthly premiums for health and dental insurance – Employee only.
- City paid monthly life insurance for employee only (1 times annual salary up to $50,000).
- Optional group term life insurance purchased at employee’s expense.
- Optional vision insurance purchased at employee’s expense.
- Voluntary deferred compensation plan – not matched by the City.

- Total compensation value (Hourly starting rate plus benefits value) for this position is $25.98 hourly/$54,035 yearly.
Before final appointment, successful applicant will be required to successfully complete a drug test, background investigation and pre-employment physical.
