Description

This is a full-time, FLSA non-exempt position with Carson City Alternative Sentencing Department, located in Carson City, NV. Under general supervision, supervise misdemeanor and felony probationers, bail and pre-trial defendants, DUI Court participants, conducts intakes and drug and alcohol testing; provide bailiff duties to courts as required.

Pay Range (Employer-Paid PERS) :

27.6983 - $38.9506 hourly / $57,612.36 - $81,017.30 annually

The recruitment process will include a POST Physical Fitness Test consisting of the following components :

  • 14 inch vertical jump

Illinois Agility Run (19.5 seconds or less)

30 sit ups (1 minute or less)

23 push-ups (no time limit)

300 meter run (68 seconds or less)

1.5 mile run / walk (16 : 57 minutes : seconds or less)

Examples of Duties

This class specification lists the major duties and requirements of the job and is not all-inclusive. Incumbent(s) may be expected to perform job-related duties other than those contained in this document and may be required to have specific job-related knowledge and skills.

  • Confers with offenders, legal representatives, family members and other concerned persons; reviews documents pertaining to legal and social history of offender as part of presentencing investigations and to formulate rehabilitation plan; communicates policies, rules, and expectations as required.
  • Responsible for safety and security of courthouse facilities.

    Compiles and maintains detailed reports.

    Provides recommendations in regard to conditional release or institutionalization of offenders; informs offender of legal requirements of conditional release; installs, monitors and removes house arrest electronic monitoring equipment.

    Coordinates case management for assigned defendants; maintains regular contact with defendants; supervises and monitors to ensure compliance with court requirements.

    Conducts criminal history investigations; serves warrants and notices to appear.

    Appears on-time and as scheduled for the purpose of testifying in Justice and District courts; presents self and acts in a professional manner.

    Conducts home visits; attempts to locate defendants who fail to appear for court dates.

    Training - Attends training as required to satisfy State and department requirements.

    Coordinates activities with other law enforcement agencies, courts and support agencies.

    Performs follow-up interviews and investigations as required.

    Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.

    Operates a motor vehicle in a safe and effective manner.

    Uses standard office equipment, including a computer, in the course of the work.

    Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with the public, other agencies and City staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment

    Typical Qualifications

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and / or ability required.

    Education and Experience :

    Equivalent to a High School diploma or GED; AND two (2) years of law enforcement experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.

    REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS :

  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Current Nevada POST (Category 1) certification.

    Required Knowledge and Skills

    Knowledge of :

  • Policies, procedures, regulations and rules of alternative sentencing programs.
  • City, state, and federal laws, statutes, ordinances and court decisions related to department activities.

    Weaponry and associated safety practices.

    Safety and security policies and procedures.

    First aid and basic CPR methods.

    City geography.

    Personal computers utilizing standard and specialized software applications.

    Standard office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment.

    Communicating effectively in oral and written forms.

    Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, in person and over the telephone.

    Skill in :

  • Interpreting and explaining laws, rules and regulations.
  • Analyze situations quickly and objectively.

    Determine proper course of action under emergency conditions.

    Cope with adverse situations firmly, courteously and with respect for individual rights.

    Use of lethal and non-lethal tools.

    Operate vehicle safely and effectively in normal and emergency situations.

    Traverse terrain safely, understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

    Prepare clear concise and accurate reports.

    Establish effective working relationships with departmental personnel, public law enforcement agencies, community groups and general public.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED :

    Under General Supervision - Incumbents at this level are given assignments and objectives that are governed by specifically outlined work methods and a sequence of steps, which are explained in general terms. The responsibility for achieving the work objectives, however, rests with a superior. Immediate supervision is not consistent, but checks are integrated into work processes and / or reviews are frequent enough to ensure compliance with instructions.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING ENVIRONMENT :

    Traverse difficult terrain, strength and stamina to physically restrain suspects, running, climbing, standing, squatting, and sitting for prolonged periods of time; occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds, strength to subdue persons, to drag, carry and lift persons and objects; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone; exposure to traffic conditions and external environment when traveling from one office to another; dexterity to write and to shoot a gun; to be heard in noisy group situation.

    Supplemental Information

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT :

  • All new employees will serve a probationary period of twelve (12) months. Such employees are not subject to the collective bargaining agreement and may be laid off or discharged during this period for any reason.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.

    Any City employee may be required to stay at or return to work during emergencies to perform duties specific to this classification or to perform other duties as requested in an assigned response position. This may require working a non-traditional work schedule or working outside normal assigned duties during the incident and / or emergency.

    Employees may be required to complete Incident Command System training as a condition of continuing employment.

    New employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation which cost the new employee $48.25 and a drug screen which costs $36.50. Employment is contingent upon passing the background and the drug screen.

    Carson City participates in E-Verify and will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each applicant's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization.
