JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB SUMMARY: The overall purpose and general responsibilities of the job.
Under the direction of the Public Works Director Assistant, the natural gas production supervisor manages, supervises and coordinates the activities and operations of the Natural gas distribution system, coordinates activities with other City departments and outside agencies. Responsible for monitoring safety and operational conditions of the natural gas system. Performs other related duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The fundamental duties and tasks that define the job.
- Develops, plans, directs and provides technical assistance for the maintenance and repair of the natural gas system.
- Communicates with contractors and assigns tasks needed to include, surveys, repairs, new line installations and regulatory concerns.
- Prepares and plans work schedules; prioritizes installation, maintenance and repair operations.
- Oversees and performs leak investigations and repairs, leak surveys, regulator station inspections, cathodic protection operations, anode protection and replacement, and odorant injection.
- Diagnoses and repairs failures in natural gas mains.
- Oversees and assists with new line installation, meter sets, and meter change outs.
- Responds to after-hours emergencies.
- Assists in the development and implementation of the Distribution Integrity Management Plan.
- Updates operator qualification, operations, and maintenance manuals.
- Trains, assigns, directs, supervises, evaluates and disciplines personnel.
- Conducts safety meetings.
- Inspects new construction, maintenance and repair projects.
- Locates gas lines using maps and location devices; marks gas lines.
- Reads and interprets maps and drawings.
- Conducts accident and incident investigations. Maintains tool and equipment inventory.
- Operates a variety of hand and power tools.
- Operates and maintains a variety of heavy equipment.
- Disconnects and reconnects services.
- Reads and re-checks meters.
- Performs related duties as assigned.

CONTACTS: Nature of contacts, external relationships, and internal relationships.
Provides general and technical information. Communication is primarily face-to-face, via telephone and through written correspondence.
Internal Contacts: Frequent contact with departmental personnel.
External Contacts: Occasional contact with the general public.
RESPONSIBILITY: Supervision given, accountability, safety, budgeting, spending authority and confidentiality.
Primary responsibility for managing the day-to-day operations, maintenance and repairs of the natural gas system in a safe and efficient manner.
DIFFICULTY: Judgment, initiative, and decision-making.
Judgment is necessary in selecting appropriate established guidelines to follow. Significant deviations require prior approval.
GUIDANCE: Supervision received and level of independence.
Employee receives direction when performing the essential job functions.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Working environment and other conditions of employment.
Working conditions are primarily outside, that includes exposure to all weather conditions. Work is performed near moving mechanical parts and in chemical and confined space hazards; offensive fumes; in and near traffic, and natural and manmade disasters. Required to work hours other than regular schedule such as days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
SECTION III - JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Minimum requirements for formal education and job-related experience.
Graduation from high school or General Education Development Certificate and three (3) years or work experience directly related to natural gas services; or and equivalent combination of education and/or related experience/
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Utilized in the performance of the essential functions of the job.
- Knowledge of natural gas distribution system operation, installation, maintenance and repair principles.
- Knowledge of relevant state and federal laws and of local ordinances.

License and Certification
- Possession of or ability to obtain Valid Texas Driver’s License
- Possession of or ability to obtain Class “C” Commercial Driver’s License

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical requirements associated with performance of the Essential Job Functions.
Physical requirements include carrying/lifting 50 lbs. and occasionally pushing/pulling up to 50lbs.; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate telephone, computer keyboard, basic office equipment; subject to carrying, lifting, twisting, walking, climbing, bending, crawling, squatting, kneeling and working in cramped areas; may require entering trenches, climbing ladders and navigating uneven surfaces and grounds to perform essential job functions.
