The City of Cedar Park is currently seeking qualified applicants for a City Management Intern. The City Management Intern will provide highly complex and professional staff assistance to the City Manager, Management staff and City Council and responsible for supporting the creation and implementation of a Performance Management Dashboard to implement the City Council’s Strategic Plan. 


JOB SUMMARY
 
Under the direction of the Assistant City Manager, the City Management Intern will provide highly complex and professional staff assistance to the City Manager, Management staff and City Council.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:       
 
  • Provides highly complex and professional staff assistance to the City Manager, management staff, City Council, assigned appointed boards and commissions, and management staff as requested, including research, official reports, preparing written graphs, computer supported presentations, oral reports, and other related documents. 
  • Plans and executes various tasks related to assigned projects; performs project management, research and coordination for assigned projects and programs.
  • Respond to citizen inquiries, over the phone, and through written correspondence; investigates concerns and recommends corrective action as necessary to resolve complaints, referring more complex issues to the Assistant City Manager for resolution. 
  • Assists in the information flow between the city manager and the City Council and assures that information is correct and disseminated in a timely and efficient manner. 
  • Performs research on a wide variety of issues of concern to the City Manager’s Office and City Council affecting both municipal operations and the public, including benchmarking of policies, programs, and procedures.
  • Assists in the preparation of the annual budget and in monitoring budget throughout the fiscal year.
  • Attends staff, City Council and assigned board and commission meetings; participates with a variety of boards and commissions, professional groups and work sessions; may represent City Manager’s office at various meetings and events; and
  • Works on special projects, including but not limited to: City Council strategic plan implementation, development of City performance management dashboard, and researching and developing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for city operations. 

** The City Management Intern will be responsible for supporting the creation and implementation of a Performance Management Dashboard to implement the City Council’s Strategic Plan.   Along with a variety of special projects, the City Management Intern will also help start and support the City’s "Cedar SPARK" (Solutions for Progress, Action, Results, and Knowledge) Innovation Team.  A newly formed team focused on driving continuous improvement and fostering a culture of creative problem-solving in Cedar Park.  


The City Management Intern is a Full-Time position - summer of 2025 with flexibility.

The internship is expected to last 3-4 months.  

For those enrolled in a Master of Public Administration, a fellowship opportunity may be available and could last up to one (1) year. 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK: 

  • Junior or Senior college student working towards a relevant bachelor’s degree (management, public administration, economics, etc.); or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Academic status: minimum of two (2) years of college completed.

Preferred qualifications include:

Preference will be given to applicants currently enrolled in a Master’s Degree program in Public Administration, Business or related field, and six (6) months of related work experience in management analysis and community/government relations for a public or political entity.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

Knowledge of: functions, principles, and procedures of municipal government and public administration; effective communication, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language; methods and principles of advanced research and report writing techniques; budgeting procedures and formats; English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; advanced business writing and report preparation; understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures and instructions; and current trends and innovations in the field of city management and administration.

Skill/Ability to: establish and maintain effective working relationships; communicate effectively with the general public, public officials, staff, community leaders and association executives; tactfully and effectively respond to requests and inquiries from the general public; conduct advanced research regarding variety of topics; prepare and deliver formal presentations before City staff, City Council, community groups, and professional organizations; effectively use various types of software packages and their applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other internet based applications; perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines; work independently in the absence of supervision; and handle confidential information appropriately.

  • While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
 
Reports to:  Assistant City Manager or designee
Directs:       This is a non-supervisory position
Other:          Works closely with the City Manager’s Office; has frequent contact with department heads, other city employees, City Council, and other appointed board/commission members; and has occasional contact with business representatives, community organizations, committees, and the general public.
