What are the responsibilities and job description for the Greenhouse Worker (Parks Seasonal Laborer) position at City of Cedar Rapids, IA?
Assists with planting and maintaining flowers within the greenhouse and throughout the city’s park system. (NE Quadrant)
Noelridge Greenhouse and Gardens is owned by the City of Cedar Rapids and has been around for 50 years, it has five fully operational greenhouses which house over 500 species of tropical plants and its open year-round to the public. Throughout the year with assistance from a volunteer organization (The Friends of Noelridge), we propagate, grow and transplant thousands of ornamental plants in beds all around the city. The principles behind Noelridge greenhouse has always been to conserve diversity of species, beautify the city and promote educational opportunities for the public. In this position you will work with horticultural staff in all operations including outdoor gardens at Noelridge and around the city along with managing the tropical greenhouses. Individuals will gain valuable practical work experience in the horticultural field including how to grow and care for over 1000 species of plants.
- Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills
- Perform all phases of plant maintenance including planting, watering, mulching, trimming, weeding in greenhouse and public areas.
- Assist with Noelridge Greenhouse events including: Easter Show, Mother’s Day Show, 50th year Summer Celebration and more in both design and running the event.
- Operate equipment including Polaris Rangers, tillers, tractor/trailer, trucks, and other garden tools
- Assist with volunteers in propagating plants via cuttings and other greenhouse activities
- Assist with planting and establishment of new Native Tallgrass Prairie bed at Noelridge
- Create soil medium, clean pots and other greenhouse tasks
- Communicate with the public about information relating to the greenhouse
- Assist with creation of educational elements at Noelridge Greenhouse
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum qualifications & desired qualifications
Laborer I:
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- An interest in learning about horticulture with past experiences preferred.
- Ability to work cooperatively and to maintain effective working relationships to accomplish job responsibilities
- Ability to perform manual and semi-skilled tasks for extended periods of time.
- Ability to work under adverse weather conditions, including rainy, sunny, hot and humid conditions
- Ability to safely operate equipment and use gardening hand tools such as pruners, shovels etc.
