Performs a variety of responsibilities and highly skilled work pertaining to underground locating and marking all types of water infrastructure and fixtures.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Properly identifies and marks all underground water infrastructures on request.
- Directs and participates in maintenance and repair of tools and equipment pertaining to underground utility locating
- Directs, organizes, and prioritizes all locate requests.
- Operates equipment within knowledge, skills, and abilities of this classification in the proper marking of water mains, water lines, valve boxes, hydrants and associated fixtures
- Participates and acts as a utility damage prevention liaison for the Water Department.
- Attends meetings for upcoming projects that require field locating.
- Operates as an efficient team member with other locators to create redundant resources for locating and marking underground utilities
- Immediately follows up on all damaged utilities to ensure locates are up to date as well as marked correctly to not duplicate contractor or excavator errors
- Operates GPS unit to collect data points of curb stops and water infrastructure
- Ensures GIS corrections are turned in to be corrected in a timely manner after notice for change has been discovered
- Prepares and maintains records of daily, weekly, and monthly work activities
- Confers with water customers, citizens, and private contractors to receive and respond to work requests, inquiries, and complaints.
- Trains and coaches co-workers in such issues such as job safety and locating practices
- Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures and safety practices
- Attends work regularly at the designated place and time
- Supports continuous process improvement initiatives
- Performs related work and helps water meter shop as required
Required Education and Experience
- Graduation from High School or GED, supplemented with one year of experience in water utility locating and the ability to operate GPS mapping equipment; or
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Required Licenses or Certifications
- Valid Iowa Driver’s License.
- Possession of a Grade 1 Water Distribution System Operator’s Certificate issued by the State of Iowa within 12 months of date of hire
- Must have the Ability to obtain “Competent Person” certification in trenching and shoring within 1 year of hire.
Work Schedule
- Monday-Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm
