About the Position
Duties may include construction project monitoring for Capital Improvement Projects and field data recording for the Sidewalk Repair Program. Construction project monitoring may include observation of street, sidewalk, sewer, water main, and flood control projects. Other duties may include design, responding to customer inquiries, traffic counting, and work on special projects.
We have two areas of focus for our Interns-- Construction or Capital Improvement Projects.
Construction Projects:
- Attend preconstruction and progress meetings on various contracts
- Documentation of daily site activities on active construction contracts
- Material testing to ensure conformance with contract specifications
- Using tape measures, wheels, and GPS to measure payment quantities
Capital Improvement Projects:
- inspection of ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) infrastructure
- Inspection of sidewalks and right-of-ways in the City
- Training on reading and understanding city and state code
- Assist with traffic studies

Job Duties & Responsibilities- Conduct observation of active construction projects;
- Collect and organize data for the Sidewalk Repair Program;
- Record traffic and pedestrian counts;
- Assist with design of minor projects;
- Research real estate and engineering records;
- Attend and observe local government functions i.e. public meetings;
- Assist with project close-out and audits;
- Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures and safety practices;
- Attend work regularly at the designated place and time;
- Support continuous process improvement initiatives;
- Perform related work as required.
- Knowledge of computer software applications to include Microsoft Word, Excel, spreadsheet and database programs;
- Ability to properly utilize the following equipment and tools: personal computers and survey equipment;
- Ability to accurately perform arithmetic calculations and mathematical functions;
- Ability to operate a personal computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities;
- Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing;
- Ability to work cooperatively and to maintain effective working relationships to accomplish job responsibilities;
- Ability to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
- Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
- Requires 1 to 2 years of technical training or study towards a Civil Engineering degree or Certified Engineering Technician preferred; or
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
- Valid license to drive in the State of Iowa.
- Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:30pm
Salary : $15 - $18
