This role will provide the candidate with a unique opportunity to contribute to the sustainability and growth of the community while gaining hands-on experience in urban planning and development.
MPO Intern:
This role will work on transportation projects across the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Planning Area that will give you meaningful urban planning experience. The MPO is currently working on its Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP), Passenger Transportation Plan, Safe Streets for All initiatives, Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), trails planning, and more.

About this Opportunity
Provides assistance for a range of comprehensive and transportation planning activities; performs related work as required.
This is an intern level position; work assignments are introductory-level, supporting professional staff project teams and under direct supervision. Based on experience and knowledge, some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative.
The City of Cedar Rapids does not offer sponsorship for employment authorization. Job Duties & ResponsibilitiesLong-range Planning:
- Develops and maintains GIS-based projects;
- Participates in Sub-Area Action Plan processes for plan elements including land use, transportation, placemaking, historic preservation, and others;
- Participates in facilitation of public input opportunities for various projects.
- Supports Planning staff in preparation of reports for Planning Commission, Historic Preservation Commission, Visual Arts Commission and other City appointed Committees and Commissions;
- Prepares studies, including research and evaluation, for proposed development policy and ordinance amendments;
- Participates in facilitation of public input opportunities for various projects.
- Assist with various transportation plans including road, bicycle, and Safe Routes to School plans.
- Create and assist with graphic design, social media, and GIS mapping.
- Collect trail pavement condition data.
- Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures and safety practices;
- Attends work regularly at the designated place and time;
- Supports continuous process improvement initiatives;
- Performs related work as required.
- Enrolled in an accredited college or university working towards a Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree in Urban Planning or a closely related field; or
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
- Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm
Salary : $16 - $18
