What are the responsibilities and job description for the Code Compliance Aide position at City of Champaign?
The Neighborhood Services Department has opportunities for one full-time (40-hours per week) and two part-time (20-hours week), limited-term positions in the Code Compliance Division. Positions are available from May 19 – October 3, 2025. The full-time position is eligible for paid vacation, personal, and sick leave, and City holidays in addition to health, life, dental, and vision insurance. The part-time positions are eligible for pro-rated paid vacation, personal, and sick leave.
Responsibilities of Position
Code Compliance Aides provide office and field support to Code Compliance Division staff. They conduct daily drive-by and walking nuisance inspections of exterior areas of residential properties within the City to determine compliance with City Code related to grass and weed height, overgrown trees and vegetation, no garbage service, junk/trash or debris, inoperative motor vehicles, and more. Code Compliance Aides will work with residents and property owners to achieve compliance and on educational outreach. This is an opportunity to gain experience with, but not limited to: scheduling inspections, report writing, property monitoring, meeting with owners and tenants, data entry, and recordkeeping.
Code Compliance Aides will be shown how to use mapping and other software programs; about municipal codes and how to interpret and apply them; prepare proper documentation including photos using a digital camera or tablet; and organize and prioritize a daily workload and schedule.
Required Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
• Ability to provide excellent customer service in potentially stressful situations.
• Ability to work and interact well with a diverse group of individuals.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather, including adverse weather conditions.
• Ability to communicate well verbally and in writing.
• Physical condition necessary to perform the duties of the job, including the ability to remain stationary for extended periods of time and traverse rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.
Preferred Qualifications
• Customer service experience involving a high level of public contact.
Drug screening and driving record check will be required. The salary is $17.39 per hour, plus an excellent fringe benefits package.
