The City of Chanhassen is seeking one GIS Intern to work 40 hours per week. The internship will begin as soon as possible and last through roughly three months. This position works within the Engineering department and reports to the GIS Specialist. The duties of this position range from producing maps, engineering exhibits, and other figures for city staff to working with Public Works staff to support their operations.

This position works within the Engineering department and reports to the GIS Specialist. The duties of this position range from producing maps, engineering exhibits, and other figures for city staff to working with Public Works staff to support their operations.
Responsibilities
- Create and edit GIS data in the City’s Enterprise geodatabase, file geodatabases, or shapefiles.
- Produce layouts and figures as requested by city staff, using ArcGIS Desktop 10 or ArcGIS Pro.
- Assist with updating the City’s Asset Management platform, Cartegraph.
- Organizing and attributing historical as-built records and other documents in Laserfiche.
- Collect GPS data for the City’s utility network for GIS.
- Other work as assigned.
- This position reports to the GIS Specialist and is part of the Engineering Department.
Required Qualifications
- Education:
- High school graduate currently enrolled in a trade school or college, or have completed a degree in GIS or related field.
- Classroom experience: Completed coursework using ArcGIS Desktop 10 and/or ArcGIS Pro.
- Other preferred experience: Familiarity with GPS equipment and collection methods, Cartegraph OMS, AutoCAD, and municipal construction documents & activities.
- Experience with Microsoft Office applications is required.
- Abilities:
- The successful candidate must be accountable and willing to work mainly in the office with the possibility of some limited outside field work.
- Interns should be able to work from 8am-4:30pm Monday through Friday.
- Good communication skills are essential.
- Maintaining a professional appearance both in the office and in the field.
- Driver’s License and Background Check:
- The successful candidate must possess a valid Class D Minnesota driver’s license and have a good driving record.
- A candidate will be subject to passing a background check.
