The hiring amount for this position is $16.50 an hour. This is a non-exempt, seasonal (variable/limited-hour) position, and is not eligible for city benefits.
Working under the general supervision of the City’s Urban Forester, the Urban Forestry Seasonal Maintenance Worker provides customer service and city beautification through efficient maintenance of city owned trees located at various locations (park properties, recreational facilities, grounds, streets, schools, downtown mall and UVA corner), performing invasive plant control/containment and maintaining appropriate records (such as GIS data collection of city-owned trees and park conditions). Provides service assistance in many functional areas within the Park system, which may include: Mowing and turf maintenance, horticulture maintenance (such as maintenance of city-owned trees, including planting, pruning, felling, mulching, watering trees, flower beds and pots), and/or Right-Of-Ways performing street mowing and Right-Of-Way maintenance etc.
This position performs routine semi-skilled work in a variety of construction, repair and maintenance assignments involving the use of common tools and operates equipment in connection with the semi-skilled tasks to which assigned (including but not limited to mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, hand operated tools, etc.). Tasks may include trail construction and trail maintenance as needed. Does related work as required.

HEAVY WORK: Heavy Work involves exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
This position may be required to work weekends, nights, holidays and/or emergency on-call.
This is a safety sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing for pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident and random testing.
The majority of time spent in this position involves outside work which may involve extreme temperatures, extreme brightness, chemicals/hazardous waste, blood-borne pathogens, infectious bacteria, fuels and allergens. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
This position also requires the regular use of or subject to vibration, ladder/step stool, traffic/roadways, driving light equipment and/or moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

- Responsible for facilities, grounds and City infrastructure maintenance functions;
- Assists with construction and maintenance projects;
- Performs simple repair and completes maintenance assignments;
- May be exposed to or required to use chemicals in general maintenance responsibilities;
- Assists senior workers in semiskilled work and the use of hand tools and maintenance equipment;
- Operates hand tools and power equipment associated with custodial, construction and maintenance operations;
- May operate vehicles as required;
- Must have the willingness and flexibility to work as a member of one or several teams;
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school or vocational school diploma or GED. (If no diploma or GED is obtained, must have a minimum of 2 years of direct work experience in the field.)
- Some experience as a laborer in the maintenance, repair and/or construction activities to which assigned.
- Some experience in the operation of mechanical and automotive equipment.
- May require valid VA driver's license by employment start date.
- May require the ability to obtain Pesticide Applicator certification.
- May require the ability to obtain a CDL within 6 months of hire.
