What are the responsibilities and job description for the Construction Inspector II - Engineering position at City of Chesapeake?
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, shop drawings, and related construction documents.
- Thorough knowledge of current construction standards, procedures, and techniques.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with citizens, contractors, and city officials.
- Ability to utilize portable and fixed ladders and requires the ability to remove heavy manholes and drop inlet covers for access.
- Ability to do walking and standing frequently on irregular surfaces.
- Tolerant of outside work in all weather conditions.
- Tolerant of noise, dust, and fumes typically generated by construction and paving activities
- Tolerant of working on construction sites sometimes in remote locations with limited access to public facilities.
- Ability to use mathematics involving the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions, measurement, and geometry.
- Ability to provide clear instructions and to identify problems and recommend solutions.
Must possess or obtain within two years of employment:
- Relevant DEQ Stormwater/Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector certification
- VDOT certification for materials and construction
- Asphalt Paving Certificate, Asphalt Plant Mix Design, Concrete Certificate, etc.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standard, this position requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards may require additional certifications. Depending on position, State and/or City certification(s) may be required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

- VDOT Certification for materials and construction (i.e. Asphalt Paving Certificate, Asphalt Plant Mix Design, Concrete Certificate, etc.), ACI
In accordance with City policy, this position is deemed safety-sensitive. As such, applicants for this position are subject to pre-employment drug/alcohol testing after receiving a conditional offer of employment and may also be subject to random testing. This drug test includes testing for marijuana. Possession of a medical marijuana card will not excuse an applicant from the testing process; however, a test will not be considered positive for marijuana if a valid medical marijuana certification is presented unless the position requires a commercial driver’s license (CDL) or is a sworn law-enforcement officer/deputy.
