Job Description
Our Development & Permits department is seeking an upbeat and customer focused Permit Technician I who will love serving the public.
The successful candidate for this position will be able to do the following:
Through training, gain an understanding of permit types and the laws and regulations that pertain to permit issuance.
Have general computer knowledge and gain the ability to navigate City systems such as: Accela, Mainframe, Outlook, GIS and other related applications.
Develop the ability to issue online Trade, Building and other permit types and enter customer supplied applications.
Have the ability to collect permit fees, reconcile daily cash reports.
Provide excellent customer service and use communication skills to provide code and regulatory information in an effective manner.
Have the ability to answer multi-line phone system, determine how to best assist the caller, page inspectors, when warranted, in a clear and effective manner.

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONALREQUIREMENT:
Requires high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education in office technology, information systems, or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCEREQUIREMENT:
In addition to satisfying the vocational/educational standard, this position requires a minimum of one year of related, full-time equivalent experience.
SPECIALCERTIFICATIONSANDLICENSES:
Must obtain Virginia State Certification as a Permit Technician within 18 months of hire date and attend the State Code Academy Core Module or other applicable training and certifications required for the type of plan review and/or permit issuance assigned to the position.
SPECIALREQUIREMENTS:
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
