The City of Chetek is seeking a Director of Public Works to oversee the planning, coordination, and management of a wide range of municipal services and projects. This is a full-time leadership position responsible for the effective and efficient operation of the Public Works Department, ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
Position Overview
The Director of Public Works serves as a key member of the City’s leadership team and is responsible for:
- Management of water distribution and wastewater treatment systems
- Supervision of streets, snow removal, parks, solid waste/recycling, and public facilities
- Oversight of construction, maintenance, and repair of all public infrastructure
- Coordination with engineers, contractors, and city officials on public works projects
- Staff supervision, hiring, training, and performance management
- Development of department budgets, equipment purchasing, and long-range planning
- Ensuring compliance with DNR, EPA, OSHA, and PSC regulations
This position may require after-hours availability, including weekends and holidays, in the event of emergencies or operational needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain water/wastewater systems per Wisconsin DNR and PSC requirements
- Lead snow and ice control operations and all seasonal maintenance plans
- Coordinate street improvements, utility mapping, and infrastructure upgrades
- Develop bid specifications and manage vendor contracts
- Direct park maintenance and recreational improvements
- Oversee city signage, lighting, storm sewers, and municipal facilities
- Respond to resident inquiries and resolve public service concerns
- Lead a team of department employees with a focus on safety, accountability, and performance
- Prepare reports, attend city meetings, and support comprehensive planning
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary education or certifications in related fields preferred
- Proven experience in public works operations, construction, or municipal management
- Supervisory experience and knowledge of safety standards and regulatory compliance
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Proficient in reading blueprints, plans, and interpreting technical documents
- Computer proficiency for record-keeping, reports, and scheduling
- Valid Wisconsin driver’s license and CDL required (or ability to obtain)
- Ability to obtain Wisconsin DNR Water Operator (Grade 1, G & D) and Wastewater General licenses
- Must pass background check and drug screening
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Must be able to lift, carry, climb, kneel, and operate machinery/equipment as needed
- Visual, auditory, and physical ability to safely perform job duties
