JOB TITLE:                 City Engineer City Surveyor Intern

CLASSIFICATION:    Non-Exempt – Seasonal

DEPARTMENT:        City Engineer

SUPERVISOR:          Deputy City Engineer or higher-level manager

SALARY:                    $17-$23 Per Hour

The City Engineer’s internship program provides students with an opportunity to gain hands-on exposure in the area Surveying, Geographic Information System (GIS), Construction, and Engineering.

While interning with the City of Cheyenne, students may be assigned to various areas of the city including land surveying, construction job sites, project engineering, project administration, field design, and data collection management.

• Assist in the review and process tract maps, parcel maps, lot line adjustments, grants of easement, and street rights-of-way for recondition.
• Assist in on-site inspections to verify survey monuments related to parcel maps and lot line adjustments. 
• Assist in providing the public assistance with information regarding plats, aerial photos, construction drawings, utility locations, benchmarks, property lines, and survey control.
• Assist in Determining angles and set grade stakes, hubs, turning points, and benchmarks using appropriate surveying techniques; locate and measure boundary lines, rights-of-way, and measure land grades; maintain accurate survey records in the form of filed notes and sketches.  Perform land surveys for property line, easement, and right-of-way locations, water rights, aerial photography, monitoring wells, and benchmark establishment.
• Assist in providing research of City and County records for deeds, easements, and other documents to determine ownership and rights to property.

• Assist the Engineering Department with miscellaneous office duties such as correspondence, plan reviews, document reviews, and/or updating files or maps etc.
• Attend Engineering Meetings and provide input and collaboration.
• Perform engineering, construction and GIS related duties and responsibilities as required.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.

• Principles, practices, and techniques of surveying.
• Street construction layout and design.
• Federal, State, and local laws and regulations related to surveying.
• Surveying principals.
• Knowledge of computer modeling techniques and computer aided drafting.
• Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, identify project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations.
• Perform complex surveying calculations.
• Present technical information effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Understand the preparation of plans and specifications for capital facilities.
• Apply professional and State standards to evaluate proposed projects.
• Work with residents and diverse professional groups in a diplomatic and empathetic manner to reach resolution on complex community issues.
• Ensure compliance with federal, State, and local rules, laws, and regulations.
• Assist in the planning of the long-range plans and programs.

Required:

Candidates may be enrolled students in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Construction Management, or closely related field of study. 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual transmittals needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 30 pounds. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions demonstrating intellectual capabilities.

Working Environment:

Indoor and outdoor environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, inclement weather conditions, and construction equipment, construction conditions such as dust, mud, hot oil, cement dust or other construction materials. Indoor environment working with machinery, office equipment, and work closely with others.
