Epidemiologist II

Number of Positions: 4
Bureau of Community Health (1 position)

Bureau of Disease Control - Epidemiology (1 position), Communicable Disease (1 position), Community Congregate Settings (1 Position)

This position is open to current BIDDERS from AFSCME AND the PUBLIC including current city employees in other unions or non-union positions. Only current city employees covered under the City's Collective Bargaining Agreement with AFSCME are considered BIDDERS, these individuals are eligible to bid. ROLE SUMMARY
1) Epidemiologist II (Community Health) The Epidemiologist II, under supervision, performs cross-cutting analysis of epidemiological data supporting a variety of health topics including chronic disease, maternal and child health, behavioral health, and department-wide projects such as the development of Healthy Chicago 2030, Healthy Chicago Survey and Chicago Health Atlas projects. Supports development of data visualizations, reports, fact sheets and briefs and performs related duties as required.
2) Epidemiologist II (Disease Control, Epidemiology) The Epidemiologist II, under supervision, supports efforts to enhance disease surveillance and outbreak response capabilities in Chicago, which include buildout of modern data infrastructure, adoption of new surveillance methods and data sources, and creation of analytic tools to support decision-making. Performs data collection, management, and analysis functions. Assists with public health emergency preparedness and response activities. Supports development of data visualizations, reports, and presentations, and performs related duties as required.
3) Epidemiologist II (Disease Control, Communicable Disease) The Epidemiologist II, under supervision, reviews infectious disease surveillance data to identify situations requiring public health action. Supports outbreak response by developing surveys for exposure assessment and performing data analysis to identify source of disease transmission. Supports development of data visualizations, reports, and presentations, and performs related duties as required.

4) Epidemiologist II -- (Disease Control, Community Congregate Settings)
Under Supervision, the Epidemiologist II supports efforts to enhance surveillance and outbreak response capabilities in Community Congregate Settings in Chicago, with a special focus on Youth Settings. Duties will include design of surveys for the collection of epidemiological data; analysis of surveillance data to track the cause, effect, and course of outbreaks; and use of various software programs (e.g., SAS) to generate complex data summaries, tables, charts, and graphic displays related to program activities and infectious conditions of public health importance in congregate settings.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES
* Analyzes surveillance data to track the cause, effect, and course of epidemics and health outcomes (e.g., prevalence, incidence, time trends, risk factors on various populations)
* Assists senior staff in the analysis of epidemiological data and the preparation of narrative reports describing the causes of morbidity and mortality
* Writes programs or uses various software (e.g., SAS) to generate complex data summaries, tables, charts, and graphic displays or to perform difficult manipulation of data
* Locates, organizes, and summarizes epidemiological literature for inclusion in reports or use as background material on new areas of investigation
* Assists senior staff in designing surveys for data collection and reporting
* Works with senior staff in designing disease intervention and health improvement programs and in recommending program changes based on the analysis of epidemiological data
* Validates the integrity of databases by generating tabular summaries to check for inconsistencies and devises statistical procedures to resolve discrepancies
* Assists in identifying new causes and risk factors associated with morbidity and mortality, conducting special studies, and researching information from local health agencies
* Monitors the timely collection of data from department clinics
* Oversees the development and maintenance of databases on health-related issues and collaborates with City departments on shared databases
* Submits research for presentation at national and local scientific conferences
* Responds to requests for epidemiological data as appropriate (e.g., collaborates with outside public health agencies and universities), as needed
* Provides information to senior staff for inclusion in research and grant proposals, as needed

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
* Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Statistics, Mathematics, or a directly related field, plus three years of epidemiological work experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience provided that the minimum degree requirement is met.


Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:
* Master's degree in Public Health, Statistics, Mathematics, or a directly related field.
* Proficiency using SAS statistical/analytical software package.
* Proficiency in creating choropleth and planning maps using ArcGIS software.
* Experience in data analysis, interpretation, and management to assist in preparing statistical reports by producing and describing summary tables, charts, and graphs.
* Experience in cleaning, matching, and merging records between large datasets.
* Experience in research methods and techniques used in conducting public health studies.

This position is funded by a federal grant. These funds may be extended, but CDPH cannot guarantee this position will be funded past July 2024.
