This recruitment is to fill one 20-hour a week internship in the Chico Airport for a limited term. Schedule is flexible, Monday-Friday.

Pursuant to AP&P 13-50, the City of Chico is committed to partnering with the community to provide personal-enrichment and professional growth opportunities through volunteer and internship opportunities throughout the City.

Interns are classified as: A student who works alongside others in a trade or occupation to gain practical work experience in a supervised environment.  Internships can be paid or unpaid, and are for students looking for real-word experience within a government setting without guarantee of a job at the end of the internship or at graduation.  Individuals must be enrolled in an accredited U.S. college and be at least 18 years of age.

Internships should typically last no longer than one year and will generally coincide with a school semester.  Students should be available for at least 10 hours of work per week.
Under the supervision of the Airport Manager, the intern performs the following:
Duties:
  • Office management (80-90%): including filing, answering phones, collecting payments, mailing bills, and answering questions related to the airport. The position will also assist with lease writing & review, grant writing & review, and any other task pertinent to running the airport administrative office.
  • Airfield Assistance: There may be times helping in the airfield may be required. This could include assisting in the replacing of lights, sweeping debris, learning airport language and communications, operating handheld equipment, and other minor airfield maintenance tasks.
  • Perform other duties as assigned as assigned.
Ability to:
  • Perform routine clerical work.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy and procedural guidelines.
  • Independently organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow-up on assignments.
  • Effectively use computer systems, software applications relevant to work performed, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks. 
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax. 
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. 
  • Complete physical tasks as assigned in the maintenance of the Airport
Knowledge of:
  • Basic methods, practices, and terminology used in aviation.
  • Methods and techniques of preparing and maintaining records.
  • Recordkeeping principles and procedures.
  • City and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols. 
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff. 
  • The structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. 
  • Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed. 
  • Proper body mechanics of lifting, bending, and climbing ladders.

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Education:
  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade supplemented by specific accounting training.
Experience:
  • None required.
Licenses and Certifications: 
  • None.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Environmental Conditions:

While performing the inside duties of this job, employee may work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures. 

The employee may also work in outside weather conditions.  The employee works near moving mechanical parts and can be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration.  The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
