What are the responsibilities and job description for the CIVIL ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN 2 (OPEN) position at City of Cincinnati?
This employee performs a wide variety of technical staff functions related to surveying and/or drafting within an engineering unit of the city; assignments may include preparing property plats and descriptions from survey notes, sketches, researching special projects and records, assisting Engineers with engineering calculations, assisting in conducting accurate topographical, underground, preliminary, property, geodetic, and construction surveys by researching land records, using modern optical and electronic survey instruments, marking and monumenting surveyed lines, and making field notes so that construction of public works projects is in accordance with City and State property laws and survey principles and practices. Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge of:
Must have knowledge of all CET 1 duties and complete knowledge of the operations of all survey tools.
Engineering principles, terminology, and standard symbols.
Common survey procedures, terminology, and equipment.
City construction specifications and regulations.
Safety policies and procedures.
Skill to:
Operate survey instruments, specialized computer software and applications.
Make neat, legible drawings and letterings in pencil or ink.
Plot on existing drawings.
Operate assigned vehicle in the course of duty, in a proper and safe manner.
Ability to:
Read and interpret property boundaries/construction and civil plans.
Determine elevations, differences of elevation, areas, and slopes.
Produce finished drawings of a moderate degree of complexity from field notes, design data, and sketches.
Read and interpret standard construction plans and specifications to ensure compliance with City and State standards.
Work independently and make decisions concerning a project without constant supervision.
Explain engineering concepts to subordinates and to understand information provided by Professional Engineers.
Follow oral and written instructions including directions from supervisors, work assignments, and schedules, safety precautions, and legal descriptions
Perform strenuous physical work (lifting heavy objects such as manhole covers, pounding stakes, clearing brush).
Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Walk considerable distances over rough terrain.
PROMOTIONAL:
- Each applicant must have two years of experience with the City of Cincinnati in engineering technical work at the Civil Engineering Technician 1 level
OR
- One year of experience with the City of Cincinnati in engineering technical work at the Civil Engineering Technician 1 level plus successful completion of 12 semester credit hours at the trade school, technical institute, or college level in a combination of the following: drafting, surveying measurement, introductory construction or construction management, computer assisted design and drafting, or other related courses in an engineering or engineering technology program.
OPEN:
- Each applicant must have two years of experience in engineering technical work performing tasks similar to those performed by a Civil Engineering Technician 1
OR
- One year of experience in engineering technical work performing tasks similar to those performed by a Civil Engineering Technician 1 plus successful completion of twelve semester credit hours at the trade school, technical institute, or college level in relevant courses.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Some positions may require a valid Driver's License.
May need to supply personal car for travel to perform duties.

MILITARY EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE EVALUATION
Military education and experience may be substituted for college level course work at the lower and upper division baccalaureate and graduate levels and apprenticeship training at the vocational certificate level on a case by case basis based on the American Council on Education (ACE) Military Guide recommendations.
