General Statement of Duties
This employee repairs and maintains machinery and mechanical equipment in a Water Works plant or facility or a Wastewater Treatment plant; repairs and maintains the plumbing and the physical structure of a plant or facility. Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications (KSAs)

Knowledge of
The construction and operation of large pumps, motors, valves, aeration equipment, and other mechanical and hydraulic equipment used in an extensive sewage collection and treatment system or a water treatment system.
Tools and equipment used in working on heavy machinery. Methods of rigging to move heavy equipment.
Operating characteristics of pumps, motors, valves, chemical feed systems, air compressors, water softening systems, and other equipment of a sewage collection and treatment system or a water treatment system.
Methods of correcting malfunctions or failures in operating equipment.
Standard symbols and markings used on drawings, plans, and specifications of equipment. Control devices used with large machinery and equipment.
Safety policies and procedures, e.g. Employee Safety Instruction Manual and applicable agency requirements.
Pneumatic equipment and tools sufficient to service and repair.
Less complicated machine tools, such as grinder, drill press and lathe, where great precision is not required.
Skill to
Use hand tools necessary to take apart mechanical devices.
Assemble mechanical devices using knowledge of mechanical equipment or following diagrams. Measure, using a variety of measuring instruments (tape, rule, micrometer, calipers, dial indicators). Perform mechanical work on material moving devices.
Cut and assemble various kinds of pipe.
Use machine tools to fabricate, modify, or create metal parts (drill, cut, tap, shape). Lift heavy pieces of equipment.
Manipulate various hand tools under limiting conditions.
Ability to
Distinguish between electrical and mechanical problems.
Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, and equipment specifications. Make field sketches of parts to be duplicated.
Hear variations in sound of operating machinery and equipment.
Determine cause of malfunction or non-function of machinery and equipment.
Apply information from blueprints, diagrams, and sketches to the machinery and equipment they describe.
Perform heavy manual labor; includes pushing, pulling, twisting, kneeling, crawling, climbing, walking, or standing.
Work at heights, depths, and in confined areas.
Work in and withstand unpleasant conditions, such as dirt, sewer odors, temperature extremes, steam, stuffiness, close spaces, sewage.
Work effectively as a member of a team.
Take interest and pride in the work.
Required Education And Experience
OPEN:Each applicant must have three years of progressively responsible experience working with large pumps, motors, valves, and other mechanical and hydraulic equipment; plumbing standards and piping methods; pneumatic equipment; blueprints, diagrams, and sketches as they relate to machinery, etc.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Some positions may require the employee to be clean-shaven and must be able to pass a respirator fit test.
Must have a valid Driver's License (in assignments requiring the operation of a vehicle and/or truck).
