ENTRY SALARY: $39,258.41
The Gas Technician Apprentice performs manual and semi-skilled construction, maintenance, inspection, installation, cathodic protection, and repair work on gas mains, service lines, gas appliances, and related apparatus. Work is performed under general direction and reviewed upon completion for conformity with construction and established standards. Upon successful completion of Job Proficiency Guide (JPG) program, Gas Technician Apprentice will be eligible for Gas Technician I position.
Essential Functions: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Assists, supports, and participates in all phases of gas distribution activities while in training and working with an established technician; learns and applies knowledge in pipefitting and other gas distribution/installation related tasks including installation and repair service work with respect to natural and propane gas operations.
Maintains and adheres to safety standards affecting the general public's welfare; performs skills within personal limits and under the authority of a qualified technician.
Removes dirt, concrete, asphalt and other surface materials; digs and opens ditches for laying pipe; loads, carries and strings pipe.
Operates and uses ditcher, air hammer, and other equipment.
Assists in making taps for new gas mains, installing and/or replacing fittings, and performing minor repair work on damaged pipe.
Installs gas meters and turns gas utility services on and off; follows protocols and safety standards for activities.
Assists in checking for gas leaks or stopped meters; diagnoses trouble in the working of gas appliances, including regulating and repairing appliances as necessary.
May keep simple records and prepare material request forms.
Assists in making conversions from propane gas to natural gas and assists in installation work.
Performs routine work such as lighting pilots, reading meters and changing meters and regulators; sets, repairs, moves, and changes out LP tanks and investigating leaks.
Must submit to random drug testing and is consistently reviewed for knowledge applied and skills performed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
A valid State driver’s license is required.
Must complete Job Proficiency Guide (JPG) from a Gas Technician Apprentice to a Gas Technician I within eighteen (18) months of hire date.
Does this position require a Commercial Driver’s License? No
Type: Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Class A or B CDL based on area of assignment for future promotion opportunities.This position may be required to operate the below equipment, machines, tools, and other work aides: Ditcher, air hammer, trenching machine, power tools and other equipment as assigned. Apprentice trainee does not require having mechanical experience or background in the Natural Gas or LP Gas industries.
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma, High School Equivalency Diploma, or G.E.D. Certificate; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
