The Recreation Superintendent is responsible for various functions of the Booker T. Washington Recreation Center, Splash Station, Senior Center, Museum divisions and is responsible for the annual budget of those divisions. Performs management and administrative oversight of activities, programing, staff training, rental scheduling, recreation software, contracts and various other projects at a high level and in a fast-paced environment.NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESMust have basic bookkeeping skills to assure financial operations are handled properlyMust have working knowledge of business English, spelling, punctuation, arithmetic, office practices and procedures, and departmental rules and regulationsMust be able to keep sensitive information confidentialMust be an independent, self-starter with the ability to deal with the public well and respond to their questions or problems in a professional courteous mannerAbility to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to request clarification when neededAbility to maintain established records and filesAbility to communicate professionally and effectively, both orally and in writingAbility to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and employees and officials in other departmentsSkill in organizing and prioritizing work in order to meet project deadlinesWillingness to be a team member with ability to be a team leaderSufficient skills to operate and train others to operate equipment effectively and safelyAbility to supervise, manage and delegate to subordinate employees through effective working relationshipsAbility to deal with the general public, vendors and fellow employees efficiently and effectivelyAbility to review, interpret, and analyze data to make sound, knowledgeable decisions and effective recommendationsGeneral knowledge of municipal purchasing, operations and proceduresEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEBachelor’s degree in Park, Recreation, Business, Public Administration, Management, or other related field plus a minimum of four (4) years of experience parks and recreation, with at least two (2) year of which involved supervisory and managerial responsibilities; ORHigh school diploma or its equivalent and at least six (6) years of experience in municipal parks and recreation, with at least three (3) of which involved supervisory and managerial responsibilities (some college courses in parks, recreation desirable); ORAny equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIREDA Valid Class C Texas driver license and the ability to maintain a satisfactory driving recordCertified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) or the ability to obtain within 180 days of hireCertified Food Handler or ability to obtain with 180 days of hireCertified First Aid, CPR, AED lay responder or the ability to obtain within 180 days of hireCertified Parks and Recreation Professional preferredENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND SAFETY HAZARDSPrimarily in an indoor environment with the ability to operate outdoors when needed.
