This position is responsible for job site logistics and operations, traffic controls, supervision, record keeping, and assigns individual tasks at job site. Performs lead work in: maintaining and repairing water, sewer, and reuse mains and associated meters, lift stations, and cross connection control devices; and other utility projects.  The position works under general supervision of the Distribution Operations Chief as well as independently developing work methods and sequences.

This position is non-exempt. Fair Labor Standards Act overtime provisions will apply. 

Per Florida Statute 295.065, certain servicemembers and veterans, and the spouses and family members of such servicemembers and veterans, receive preference and priority, and that certain servicemembers may be eligible to receive waivers for postsecondary educational requirements, in employment by the state and its political subdivisions and are encouraged to apply for the positions being filled.

  • Supervises and participates in the work of utilities crews engaged in the repair, rework, and maintenance of the water, sewer, and reuse infrastructure.
  • Performs repairs and maintenance on lift stations infrastructure including pumps, pipes, and electrical panels. Cleans and maintains valves and pump stations.
  • Performs repair and maintenance on laterals, mains, and manholes; installs water service lines/mains; and repairs breaks.
  • Performs routine maintenance on fire hydrants per AWWA and City standards.
  • Flushes hydrants, exercises valves, and performs pressure and flow tests of fire hydrants.
  • Fuels generators.
  • Installs and changes out water and reuse meters as well as cross connection devices.
  • Leads crew in job performance, equipment usage and safety practices. 
  • Operates various heavy and light equipment including backhoes, crane truck, dump trucks, etc.
  • Troubleshoots meters.
  • Responsible for job site logistics and operations, traffic controls, record keeping, and individual task assignments at job site.
  • Establishes and maintains efficient and effective records, and compiles data and prepares various records, reports and other documentation required.
  • Communicates effectively both verbally and in writing, and reads and interprets plans.
  • Implements and enforces City personnel policies, departmental policies, and procedures.
  • Maintains telephone service/communications and may be placed on emergency call out. May be required to work rotating shifts, on call duties, and extended hours in emergency situations.
  • May oversee contractors including inspections, scheduling, and monitoring time as well as contract requirements.
  • Assists in electrical maintenance at pump stations; and assists water/wastewater operators.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • High school graduation or GED.
  • Two (2) years of experience in the maintenance of sewage pump stations and water system components plus experience in construction and maintenance of underground utilities.
  • Class 3 Water Distribution Certification or Class "C" Collection Certification; obtain the other license within one (1) year of advancement.
  • Prefer certified in Traffic Control and Safety in the work area.
  • Prefer certified in Trenching and Excavation.
  • Prefer certified in Confined Space.
  • Valid Florida Driver's License.
  • Obtain a restricted Class "B" Commercial Florida Driver’s License with air brake and tanker endorsements within 90 days from date of hire.
  • Obtain a Class "B" Commercial Florida Driver’s License with air brake and tanker endorsements within 180 days from date of hire.
  • Obtain FEMA IS100, IS700 and IS200 within 6 months from date of employment. 

In some cases, an equivalent combination of higher education and experience may be considered, provided that the education and experience is in a relevant and related field.

Physical Demands

  • Continual light work and occasional heavy work.
  • Able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 80 pounds.
  • Requires frequent walking and standing, climbing, stooping, reaching, and bending. 
  • Good finger/hand dexterity and hand/eye coordination. 
  • Good eyesight, hearing, and speech. 
  • Regular driving of vehicle.
  • Must be able to wear personal protection equipment (PPE).

Work Environment   

Works outside in sometimes adverse environmental conditions (e.g., heat, cold, and rain) for moderate periods of time. Exposure to construction and water/wastewater site hazards, traffic, and moving machinery. Involves working with high voltage equipment, heights, and below ground level conditions.
